The dealer says the sludge buildup caused something to seize and the timing chain went. The engine is shot. does this make sense with a car with 47000 miles

My 1998 Prelude uses oil. it always has. At first it was just a quart or so in-between oil changes. Now everytime I fill up gas, I have to add a quart. Is there any product that actually works and helps slow oil consumption? I really dont want to do a ring-job at 140K

PS I have already switched from 5W30 to 10W30.
Aslo here lately, I have started to smell a little oil odor (like a drip on the exhaust type of thing after oil changes) If it is a leak aswell any sugestions on where to look?

Anything under 30 mph and my rpm needle seems to go haywire. As I pick up speed, the car runs smooth and back to normal. When I go to turn, it kinda feels like it wants to cut off. When I come to a stop, my takeoff is slow at first before kicking into gear.

Can anyone help before I take it to a mechanic and get charged $1000 for something that may actually cost a few bucks to fix?

I'm not a mechanic of any sort, so whatever work it requires would have to be done by a qualified individual, of course. they say tehy get such great fuel efficiency and that domestics suck. My car get the same gas mileage as a toyota corolla up untill the year 2000 models on the highway. Even al gore says that our cars arent up to the fuel efficiency standards. Anyone else agree with me that GM can make fuel efficient cars that can rival imports of the same size?

I recently purchased a 1983 VW Vanagon with Country Homes camping conversion. When the back hatch is open, if the bed is folded (and the back seat up), the bed sticks out the hatch. I think the previous owners may have reassembled the hinges/parts incorrectly at some point. Also, they forgot to give me the mattress...could that be the problem? Has anybody else had this problem, or can you email me a pic of how it is supposed to look? Thanks!
