I own a shop, and know for a fact you are correct. One thing you can hit them with the next time they start it with you is; Ask them just where these imports are made? Almost every import that is sold in the United States is in fact made right here in the U.S. OK, assembled here, but if you look at most any component on any vehicle assembled in the U.S. its easy to see that most all the parts are made somewhere else. They don't think your Cavalier is trendy enough to compete with the Honda's and the Toyota's, that's all.
Glad to help out, good Luck!!!

My '88 Cavi gets about 17mpg. It's a V6, and it needs engine work. It was rated at 23mpg in 1988. Alot of cars were getting 14-16mpg, and saying they were getting 20-25. It just depends on if the car is a performance vehicle, or an economy. NOW cars can be both. But not so much in the 80's-90's.

I have a 92 Chevy Lumina coupe with 127,000 miles it has the 3.1L V6 and it gets 27 miles to the gallon on the high way and 19 miles to the gallon in local driving. the car is 14 years old and it is still able to get the manufactures fuel mileage estimates. Your friends heads are up their asses they are one sided and don't know any better.

I was mid twenties all the way to 200,000. Low thirties before I replaced the fuel pump.
Of course it was a stick and I kept the RPM's down.
