Well that all depends...
In my case the choice is based on the fact that I already have two (both 3-series), so the third one would be mostly based on BIG engine, but for fun, for pleasure.
First it would hinge on condition, I would likely take the one that's better off, to a point regardless of model.
Assuming they're close, there are still many factors:
If the choice is between a 740 and a 318, I would take the 7.
That is, if a v-8 is in your fuel economy budget, but you can always sell the 7 and buy a 318 and pocket some cash.
But if it's between a 730 and a 350, I'll take the super rare v12 in a 3 any day!
735 vs. 325, who knows, is the 325 convertible?
I LIKE the 7, but good tires for it will run you $1,000 a set!
The 3 runs a more reasonable, standard size tire.
As a rule the 7's worth more (until you get into 340+ convertibles) and you could sell it and buy a lesser one, but do you want something ready to drive that you will keep, or are we playing stock market cars?
I do not remember if they make 4 door 7's, but I know they make both 2 and 4-door 3's, this may further affect the choice.
I personally don't care for 4 doors, but you might.
The 7 is bigger, it has more space (but again I can not remember if they make it in 4 door versions, and I want to say no but...).
If you're looking at transporting a family for instance, that further affects the choice, it gets too involved for me at this point.

I would go the 3 series. Better gas mileage, less cost to maintain (in terms of parts). Plus the 7 series is too big looking.

Obviously the 7 series. Its worth hecka more, has way more power and is just hot. You could always just sell it and get two 2 series!

Which ever cost more, then sell it. Put the money into a preformance packaged Ford 302 or 351W with mated 5 speed, and install in my Ranger, keep excess money for investments, RRSP's and Mutual Funds.
I work in a garage and BMW's are an absolute pain to work on, and I don't fit in them relitivily well. When something breaks, WHEN as in only a matter of time, they are super expencive to repair. I've done many repairs, and they all have brought me to high stress levels that i could ahve avoided by not taking the job.
I have 2 Friends that work in 2 different BMW dealerships, and they both hate BMW's with a passion now. They are not quality built for the cost of them anymore.
Edit- How can an opinionated question with an opinionated answer be wrong? Too bisad of a question.
