I'm a CPA in Michigan and I wish I had a dollar for everytime I heard the following (as if, despite being a CPA, I didn't know):

1. "Well it's a buyer's market right now - you can find a really good deal" (The houses I really want and would feel comfortable owning are still about $100K more than I can get)

2. "Well by renting, you're just throwing away money... Don't you want to build equity? You can get such a great write off on your taxes too, from the interest... (No - really? I guess even though I passed the CPA exam, I didn't know all that - thanks - and yes, the people that say this one are close relatives who KNOW I'm a CPA...) My husband and I have been renting an apartment since mid 2002 and I know part of it is inertia... I spent years trying to pass the CPA exam and now that I have, I just want to relax after work -- why do I feel this house hunting is such a chore? My husband keeps sending me links to different houses etc. Hello? I don't know he's finding these...

I purchased my first home last year with a neighborhood bank they transfered my account to some mortgage company 4 months later which I had no control over and now I am being charged for PMI. My previous bank didn't charge me PMI and the company they sent me to did not inform me that they were going to charge me PMI so they paid the difference added into escrow for last year and know they are taking up my monthly payments unless I pay a large amount of money on an escrow coupon. why should I be charged that plus interest if they did not tell me of the change. There was no difference in my mortgage statement or a letter telling me that they are going to charge me PMI or that I was not paying enough in escrow what can I do? And why should I have to pay PMI with them if I didn't with my previous bank.

I am getting marreid soon and would like to move to abetter neighborhood. I was looking at some rent-to-own houses. Financially, is this a good idea or is it a scam and what are the ins-and-outs to the renting to own process.

I've read both good and bad things about Quicken Loans, and they seem a extremely pushy on the phone. Has anyone had a good experience with them in the past? Has anyone been ripped off from them, if so how and for how much?

We have been in arrears for a couple of months by 1 month and we have made promises we've been unable to keep and now our mortgage company is threatening us with court action. We are both working two jobs now and will be able to pay the arrears but the mortgage company understandably have now got the hump and have said we need to pay by end of March but we don't think we can.

More details to prevent some of the sarcastic/unhelpful answers I got the first time around:
We both have excellent credit.
We would pay with student loans
In lieu of purchasing, we will have to rent an apartment and use student loans to pay the rent - in our city, we are looking at somewhere between $1000 and $1500 for a one bedroom. Thus, purchasing and paying into something seems preferable to watching the rent fly out the window every month.
We were specifically looking for a program that caters to grad/professional students. We anticipate making over $300k combined in 2 1/2 years.
Please don't answer if you can't offer any helpful information. We know that this is not the best situation for home purchase, but are trying to work with our options.
Thanks!

I have a first floor flat in london, it has a 120 year lease. The building it is in has only 2 flats. Mine and my neighbours below. The neighbour below owns the lease. I would like to buy the freehold. Can I make my neighbour sell me the freehold to my flat? Also is the fee he can charge capped? I think the law changed recently, but am not sure.
Thanks in advance.

Hi. I live in an L.A. suburb. I work full-time and go to school part time. I make $16/hour at my job. Now back home (Nebraska) I would be able to live a comfortable lifestyle on my own, but I am finding a hard time being able to survie with this money. I am renting a room and cannot afford to get my own place. I know people that don't make what I make and they are still able to afford a $1200 1 bedroom. I don't understand. . .if it's me. . . or if rent really is expensive. Any tips from anyone that's making it on their own and making about what I make?

I am currently a college student renting a house in Wisconsin. It is a very old home with many problems. Recently our 2nd floor bathtub faucets have been leaking. We've tryed everything to stop this. It's been running down cracks and started leaking through the ceiling panels on the 1st floor. Our landlord knows about this problem and has done nothing to fix it.

I am very concerned about mold since i have bad allergy and sinus problems. Is this something a landlord is respondible to fix?? Or do i just have to suffer through being sick all the time? (we have 4 buckets under the celing right now to catch the water) (It's a lot of water!) If she wont fix it, is there some kind of renter regulation place we can report this to?

Please help! What is your next step??

Got approved and am 1st time buyer...I called a real estate co. and the lady who answered the phone was eager to show us houses, etc. we looked at 3 with her. The question we had about the house (which were there listings) she didnt know the answers to..the realtor seemed to be more interested in the people's stuff that was in the house..How do you pick a good realtor without all of them just wanting to jump in and be your realtor...we are 1st time buyers and dont know anything about purchusing a home. They are calling my house sayin this other realtor isnt right, we dont have to do this or that, etc. We want someone that will explain the process, and help us. I live in a small town and dont wanna like bump into one of the realtors..I feel like I was doing them wrong....So can you visit with each and every realtor til you find one you wanna work with or what..I dont feel the realtor that showed us the 3 houses so far is very good...Will it upset her if I changed realtors?

I got an 1br apt on May 1st 2006 for 1 year lease contract.

I moved in at April 15th 2006 though contract started by May 1st 2006 because the landlord wanted extra money for half of the rent of April, so I paid half rent and also 2 months security deposit which doesn't include any rent, purely 100% security deposit, before I moved in.

However, I'd like to renew my lease in coming May and wondering if it's possible to change the amount of security deposit at the time renewing my lease.

If the current lease will be expired and will have a new one, will the 2 mo deposit take over to the next lease? Or can I have a completely new, another contract(lease) meaning I'll get the 2 month security deposit back first then I pay her 1 month security deposit with a new lease?

I also wonder if there's any law about the amount of security deposit in NY? Or can a landlord ask a tenant for security deposit as much as she want?

I'd really appreciate if you can answer this. Thanks in advanc
