Hi. I live in an L.A. suburb. I work full-time and go to school part time. I make $16/hour at my job. Now back home (Nebraska) I would be able to live a comfortable lifestyle on my own, but I am finding a hard time being able to survie with this money. I am renting a room and cannot afford to get my own place. I know people that don't make what I make and they are still able to afford a $1200 1 bedroom. I don't understand. . .if it's me. . . or if rent really is expensive. Any tips from anyone that's making it on their own and making about what I make?

hello, heres an idea:sit down and list last month's income and all of the receipts and expenses you incurred leave nothing out, liquor, cigarettes, panhandlers etc., and your vision should be clarified, also you may have to get a second job,BUT, the cost of living is extremely high in Ca, as a woman you and I both know beauty doesn't come cheap but if it's worth it to you it's worth it.

well i dont think mean that where you living at does cost alot of money like living in expensive place in calif . like me i live in santa cruz but my house its a two bed rooms town house and its also a rental too but i do have do pay over least over $800.00 for buying the foods, useing the electronics and also the phone lines . that all the raise of the things i already paid off like the rent house before i moved here last year . i dont need to pay the yard work or even dont need to pay the othere stuffs like if i had a broken windows or even needed a plumber . i just need to call the estate people to come over and see what the problem is and they will just hurry up and call somebody to come over and fix it right way . the owner not me , the ownere who own this house does pay them . so i dont need to worrying so much cause i can afford it . by working with fulled time job by helping out with my families members buinesses and earn money whenever they do need me . but i do have a part time its going to school in the early in the morning and yes i do have sometimes home work to do after school. i am in college so i can do my work at school . well if you cant afford or even pay the money that you needed to pay off by living in L.A then i think you should get youreself a new place like a small apartment that is little bit cheaper cost then you can save extras money . or you can do this change youre work schulues in different time and days so you can work more hours and get pay more. or you also do this if you want to . you can just keep youre job and laid off for school later on you can go back to school when ever you have the chance . why, dont you ask youre parents or even youre families to help u out little bit then you can pay them back whenever you can .

You make plenty, your probably just spending too much.

Do you eat out a lot? at all?
If you buy groceries, what kind? Ramen noodles are 6 for a dollar, you can live off these for months.
drink Kool-Aid.
Go to flea markets and yard sales for furniture and clothing and household needs. Buy everything used.
Buy an old used car, spend no more than $2000 on it.
Cut up your credit cards and throw them away, pay off the balances.
Ride a bicycle whenever possible. Buy one used at the salvation army for under $20
Don't get cable tv, buy a regular tv, get rabbit ears.
Don't pay for internet, go the library, it's free.

You'd be amazed at what you could afford if you put your mind to it.

$16 an hour ins't a lot for LA. Lots of people make more than that and still struggle. Rent is your biggest obstacle. Most people I know have roomates to help take some of the burden off. Also most apartments take the rule of thumb that you have to gross 3x the amount of rent (which you would qualify for about a $925/mo for rent).

$16/hour won't go far, when you're alone.

What suburb? Inland Empire?
