I have $20000 in credit card debt that I accumulated when I was in college to help my mom pay her bills when she lost her job. I have been trying to pay it off since, but I am a school teacher and do not make enough money to pay more than the minimum each month.

I was on the verge of Bankruptcy a couple years ago and my parents generously offered to allow me to move back home for a year to get my credit squared away.

In that year, I managed to settle my debt with almost all my creditors for about 1/2 to 2/3rds of the orginal debt. For example, my debt with one credit card was about $1,800 and I settled for $1,000 and paid it off.

A year or so later, I'm starting to receive letters from different creditors stating that I owed now $800.00 to them as they've bought the balance of my debt from the last collection agency.

Is this legal? Why should I bother settling if they can turn right around and make the pay the full balance anyway? I live in the State of Oklahoma if that matters.

I'm wodering if a creditor sees an updated credit report every time they report to the bureaus.I have some negative information that should come off soon because the origonal creditor has finally submitted the proper insurance information. The cards that I have review for a credit limit increase periodically and I have an EXCELLENT payment history with all of them.Do they also use updated information?I do see all of these companies under the section under "inquiries viewed only by you" leading me to believe there is a soft inquiry every month when they report. Please only answer if you know for sure.I'm also wodering if insurance inquiries show up as hard inquiries as well if you have that information but the former is of more importance to me.

Ok so I applied to a best buy card and I got approved but for program b and only $300. It says the APR for purchases is 24.9% which may vary. Other APRs 28.9% which may vary. There are a couple more things that I won't list at the moment but I will if it can help answer my question. My question is if I buy something with this card and I pay it right off in one month will I be charged the full 24.9% APR. I am assuming that the APR rate is annually so only if it took me a year I would be charged 24.9% interest. If I use this card and buy something for $300 I don't want to be charged 25% interest if I pay it off in one month. That's $75 right down the drain. Thanks for your time.

I've used PayPal before but their 3% fee seems high. The nice thing is they have no monthly fee. However, I've heard they can freeze your account indefinitely for minor issues. What do you recommend and what are the costs?

yea well it all started out by me not having a job and having to pay the collection agency. they wanted to draft it out of my bank acct. but when it came around that time i didnt have the funds so my bank told me to just close the acct. and i called the a*hole back to tell him. so then he calls my parent's house and leaves messages. so i call him back and we get to talk. then he goes on this rampant about him trying to "help me out" before and now hes just goin to let them garnish 25% of my wages. then i ask him where do i send a money order and he tells me the info and it is to colorado. but the "law firm" he works for is in georgia. and the money order is supposed to go to COLLECT AMERICA. then he says that if i dont pay by the 28th . then they are goin to garnish my wages. the whole time he's being a total a*hole so then i end up starting to curse then he hangs up on me. do i have to pay by the 28th or is he just sayin that date? what can i do? i am goin to pay jus need some time. I don’t really know if I got served court papers. Um he is working under a attorney office’s name. And I’ve been sent a letter before. Just a regular letter though.

If interest is 20% let's say (I know that's not the best rate, but just for an easy #).
If I charge 10,000$, and I only have to pay $100/ month minimum (let's just say I know it might be more). How do I determine how much of that 100$ goes to the principal balance? Is like $99 of it going to interest ?

If I paid just the minimum, I know it is bad but approximately how long would it take to pay off? 10 years?

I'm just confused about what the 20% refers to. Is that yearly, but I have to pay monthly, so.........pls explain (btw I have a college degree & I'm not dumb! but they never teach you these things in college LOL)

Talk to me like I'm a 5 year old. I'll keep the values to small amounts

Let's say that your credit limit is $500.

You have $300 on your checking account, which can be linked to your credit payments. 2 scenarios:

Full payment.
Let's say you spent $400 in a month. They will then deduct $400 at the end of the month to pay off your credit, but since you overdrafted by $100, you will be charged $22 for it. So you end up paying $400+22.

Minimum Payment:
Spent $400, so your checking gets debited $10 as minimum payment, and the company sends you a bill for $390, which you pay off before the deadline. Total cost: $400.

So am I right to say that it's better to use the minimum payment scheme since I don't have to worry about overdraft, as long as I make my monthly payments on time? I'm just trying to build credit, I don't have plans of incurring debt. Just want to clear things up.

My ex decided to use my 10 year old daughters SSN in order to obtain utility services because she already used up credit in her own name. I already filed a police report and they have wiped her slate clean but she is trying to use the excuse that it was ok to use her SSN because it would have cleared in 7 years anyway. I want to know what the story is with that theory, its it true?
