I am asking my question another way... my aunt is a dental assistant for an oral surgeon. she uses her bilingual skills to communicate the specific medical/dental care to these spanish speaking patients. she's been in the field for 13 years, but working for this her current employer for 3 or so years and hasn't been compensated for this. She is now up for her salary review and since she's proved how valuable this can be to him, she is asking for compensation adjustment for this interpreting service on top of her dental assisting skills. She lives in the Bay Area, CA and probably makes $17-18 and hour with benefits too. What type of a premium should she be making for her bilingual skills? She is trying to narrow down the $ amount or % she should be asking for.

Right after graduating college with a BA degree in Spanish, I got hired RIGHT on the spot & had an IMMEDIATE job opening for a job as an ESL teacher's assistant. But I heard they only get paid $14,000/yr. The day I was supposed to start work, I called in to quit the job right before I was supposed to come into work & moved from New Orleans, LA to NYC, NY, thinking I would have a better opportunity at increasing my Spanish fluency. In NYC, I found myself homeless & begging for food. I took the test to try to enter NYU's translating & interpreting program & failed it. But the reason why I turned down the job & moved was because of fear of losses & fear of another hurricane like Katrina. I'm now living in North Texas & am sad & depressed because I don't have a job. Many people tell me I shouldn't work because I'll lose my SSI & Social Security benefits & medical insurance & that I'll most likely not get them back. I feel like I went to college for nothing. I can't put my career to use.

I just went through an ordeal where an employer kept alluding to the fact that I was an excellent candidate. He even emailed me a message telling me the salary and asking me to email him if I was still interested, which I did.

Well, I did not get the job. It hurts because the employer was the reason I put too much hope in this position. I will try to be more careful next time. Never put all of your eggs in one basket!

in Georgia if you are fired, or if you quit - and you have signed a very restrictive non-compete clause agreement...can you really NOT work in your chosen field in the city you live?? I can see the company not wanting you to take their business clients or take trade secrets but to not even let you take another job in your same career??? IS this really legal?? Before the agreement is signed what can be done to work with the employer to lighten up!??

I began a new employment almost 5 months ago. I had an young immature, super stubborn, cocky programmer who lacked the basics and didn't do things in a proper manner. When I talked to a "lead" guy about it, he didn't care and didn't want to get involved. The "lead" guy pretty much didn't care, and all he wanted to do was hide behind his monitor and be left alone.

So, in trying to do the what's right, I got stabbed by these incompetent guys.

Does anyone have similar experience in trying to do really what's right and got blamed for it?
