My fiancee is currently in school for nursing. She'll be taking her RN exam in December '08, and she hopes to later go for midwife...

...Let me let you in on a couple things. Make sure that nursing is something that you REALLY want to do. It's the type of profession where you don't just go in it for money. You really should have a genuine love of helping people. And the curriculum is rigorous.

If you go to a university, then it should take 4 years to get your RN. For certifications and degrees above that, the time can vary.

The university route is a good way to go, but let me also recommend hospital-based programs. My fiancee is in a school that is sponsored by the local hospital system. The benefits of this is that it offers loan forgiveness (80% of the tuition is paid as long as she works for the hospital system for two years after graduation), finanial aid, a job is pretty much assured if you graduate, and you gets lots of real world experience beginning with the first term (her first semester, my fiancee had to go to hospices/hospitals 10 times, and actually work in these places alongside real nurses, gaining very valuable experience. You can read all you want, but there's no substitute for hands-on experience.)

Anyway, nursing is a great field to get into. There is still a shortage of nurses, so job opportunities will abound when you get your first degree.

Good luck!
