I am asking my question another way... my aunt is a dental assistant for an oral surgeon. she uses her bilingual skills to communicate the specific medical/dental care to these spanish speaking patients. she's been in the field for 13 years, but working for this her current employer for 3 or so years and hasn't been compensated for this. She is now up for her salary review and since she's proved how valuable this can be to him, she is asking for compensation adjustment for this interpreting service on top of her dental assisting skills. She lives in the Bay Area, CA and probably makes $17-18 and hour with benefits too. What type of a premium should she be making for her bilingual skills? She is trying to narrow down the $ amount or % she should be asking for.

It's really a matter of supply/demand. If there are many bilingual people in the area, her value for this skill is diminished. Where I live, about 10% of the local population speaks Spanish, not to mention all the immigrants. Spanish speakers here are "a dime a dozen."
