I either want to be a theoretical physicist or roboticist, and invent in my spare time. Which career will help me invent?

I've seen inventors from every career path, including people without a college degree.

Robotics would be better for inventing, because you have hands on experience with the mechanical aspects. Theoretical physics, on the other hand, deals with theories, and unless you are designing equipment to test the theories there isn't as much hands on work.
