How would you go about setting up a non-for-profit foundation?
We are planning to start doing some fundraisers to help pay for the attorney fees for my adoption of my stepson. We want to do things the right way and if possible to make donations/ contributions from the fundraisers tax deductible for the contributors. Would becoming a non-profit be the best way to go?

I'm looking into an owner-financed property. I noticed that the tax value is below the owner's asking price. I thought I was told before that for properties priced above tax value, lenders refuse to finance them later when you're ready to obtain a traditional mortgage. And that this is how a lot of these owner financed deals are doomed. But the seller says that tax value is just a value given by the county, and is often below actual purchase price, especially if the property has been very well maintained like this one has.

Am I misunderstanding the relation of tax value to sales price? I don't want to think badly of the seller or anything like that, in case that she's right and I'm wrong, you know?

BTW, the tax value is around $74,000 but asking price is $89,000. It's a very well maintained home, but I'm just not sure if something fishy is going on!

I'm trying to get a sense of what I can offer sellers. We're new buyers, so we can close quickly, but we are tightly limited to $120k, anything over starts eating our closing/downpayment fund. There are a number of homes we'd like to put in an offer on, that run 125,000 to 140000. Any suggestions? Is it unrealistic to talk to a $140k seller with our limit? Or is it worth pushing our luck? We're in eastern North Carolina.

I want to major in psychology in the University, and I may want to be a doctor.

What I really want to do is;

1. Just like a therapy counselor, hear individual problems and advice, counsel them. But I do not want to be a mere therapy counselor, because it is a low-paying job.

2. I want to be able to prescribe drugs or health food, or at least be able to recommend to people.

What kind of job will I get with majoring the psychology?

Here is the list of what I want from the future job;

1. High-paying salary.

2. Growth possibility. It means, whatever I do, I wish there is a possible way to get promoted or get bigger scale, like moving into much larger space office, dealing with more high-class patients, spreading my reputation, etc.

Is it possible to become both a counselor and physical doctor, that I can prescribe a medicine?

Other than the above, by getting degree on psychology, what else can I become?

Thanks!

Should a married woman (or man) have a separate savings account (or investment vehicle) from any joint accounts that they may have with their spouse? I read this somewhere and I thought it was interesting. The premise of the article was that a woman needs a separate account to establish her good credit and to have money in case she needs to leave her husband. I'm just wondering what others think of this.

This applies to non-retirement accounts. I certainly think each member of a marriage should have their own, individual retirement account.

I have been asked to sign a contination of employment contract as a while ago my employer got bought out. In signing this contract, I have noticed that there is a line as such: Your normal working hours are 8 to 6 which equates to 9 hours per week (excluding lunch break). Your lunch brake is 1 hour per day.
Does this mean that I am now legally entitled to work for just 1 day per week to get my full annual salary?
I am truly intruiged by the legal implications fo this!
PS - I also get 23 days holiday per year, so does this mean I now can work for just 29 days/weeks per year!!??

This is a broad market phenomenon that is affecting the entire financial sector. Are there actually some CEOs of other financial services companies who looked at collateralized loans over the last few years and thought, "No, there's too much exposure here to the subprime market and, since I can tell the future, I know that subprime mortgages are going to start defaulting in record numbers. So we're going to reduce our exposure to this particular investment vehicle"?

Of course not. It's not like any other human being in the same position would have managed any differently. So why were Citi's and Merrill's CEOs forced out? This whole thing really has nothing to do with them....

Someone from our homeowners association (a legal corp) came to our door in the middle of a party and demanded payment of a 2 mo old past due bill. I said I needed to look at it when I had a moment, to verify. However he said he would just stand there until I gave him a check. Being in the middle of having company I had no choice but to pay this stranger and get on with the party.

Both my husband and my income is less than our debts, this doesn't even include food and gas! All of this due to our cluelessness when we bought our home with no money down, 100% financed, 3/1 (interest only) ARM!!, that can not be refinanced because property values have gone down so much. Thanks in advance for the advice!

Is this country mad or is it just me?

Why does a house purchased at £251,000 cost the buyer £7,040 more than a house with a purchase price of £249,000? I really don't get this stamp duty lark.

I always assumed it would be 1% of £250k plus 3% of anything over, up to £500k.

My budget is now £249,995. First time buyer trying to make the plunge into an over inflated market and the governement want me to drop my pants and bend over. I can't understand why any houses would sell between £250k and £265k, such is the difference between a £249k property.
