Why do they all say they dont go south of the Thames if its an evening? There're lots of people who always say they dont go south of the river at this time of day etc

I will visit Sydney and Melbourne in early June 07. I want to go to snow mountain. Is it possible for me go to a snow field from Sydney and then go to Melbourne directly without back to Sydney?
Any field good for beginner?
Any good backpacker close to the field good?
I do not have a driving license, how can I go to the field?
Actually, I just want to play snow, skiing is not necessary ^_^.

I wanna rent a 125cc scooter and drive to the shetlands and back via Orkneys. Is it a good idea as i've planned a route and a pace etc. Where can i rent a scooter in the north of england or scotland to do so as i live in London and cant be bothered transporting my ped up there.
