Being an Ozarks Native, I have been through nearly every tourable "tourist" cave in the area. I'm also an avid spelunker, but you may not want to drag the wife and kids through a wet hole in the ground for an entire day. There are a number of great cave tours for the family in the Ozarks and no matter where you stay, you are bound to find one or two. I have linked a few that I have personally been to and recommend for the entire family from age 8 to 88!
The easiest was Fantastic Caverns near Springfield, Missouri. The tour is about an hour, very informative, and the cave is large enough that you ride in a jeep - very comfortable for even grandma and grandpa. They have wonderful facilities, are reasonably priced and the drive is very scenic. Just watch your head. http://www.fantasticcaverns.com/default.htm
At Silver Dollar City, near Branson, Missouri, you will find Marvel Cave. This is an easy walking tour even for those not in the best walking condition. I believe they have handicapped facilities if you need them. The cave is FABULOUS! It is what you think of when you think "cavern". Huge ceilings, remarkable formations, water, cave creatures, ghost stories (it's a popular Halloween trip) and legends of Indians and outlaws! This is a great trip if you plan to spend any time in Branson - and if you don't, you should. http://www.bransonsilverdollarcity.com/rides-attractions/ride_detail.aspx?AttractionID=399
The Ozark Mountain region is full of explorable caves dating back to prehistory. The caves were used by native Americans, explorers, soldiers, outlaws and were prominently featured in the movie, "Deep Impact" where the "deep limestone caves of Missouri" provided a hiding place for those slated to escape destruction by a giant asteriod (and don't think we hadn't already thought of that!).
This site has a map and links to many different caves all over the Ozarks, so no matter where you are staying, you are certain to find one near you. http://www.showcaves.com/english/explain/Maps/index.html
Have fun and welcome to the Ozarks!
