Parckester is in a very nice area, I assume you are talking about the massive Parkchester Complex. The area has a bit of everything, one of the oldest Macy's (after Hearld Square) in the East Coast sits on Metropolitan Ave, near East 174th Street. The subway station (6 at Parkchester) is an express stop and you have an express bus (BxM6) to the East side of Manhattan, running seven days a week.

Just don't forget to check the building for any violations before you rent/buy. Since this building is one of about 30 buildings managed by a corporation, you shold have little or no problem making yourself home in the Bronx. J. Lo. grew up in Castle Hill, less than a mile away from Parkchester.

All told, there are about 100 stores in the immediate area. Parking is a bit tough so your best bet is the subway or the expres bus (more expensive).

A friend of mine stayed there with another friend for a few months one summer. It seemed like a nice place.

The apartments were not huge, nor (circa 1996) were they wired for a lot of appliances. The buildings were built before we had a lot of toys to use.

But I myself would not hesitate to live there.
