I am confused about the entry requirements to Italy. I will be traveling to Venice next month and will be there for 2-3 days only. Do I still need to complete an application with the local police? (see below) Or,is this just for people who plan on staying for more than 90 days? I've never heard of anyone having to do this before.

ITALY - *Passport required. Visa not required for tourist or business stays up to 90 days. (**90-day period begins when entering Schengen countries). Within eight days upon arrival, visitors are required to register with local police and obtain a permit to stay, regardless of length of visit. Proof of sufficient financial support may be required. For stays longer than 90 days, employment, or study, a visa is required

I currently live in Portland, Ore., which many consider to be some kind of paradise. However, after 7 years here, I am tired of the constantly poor economy/endless struggle to find jobs (I have a Masters degree from an Ivy League school); and the weather is depressing. I manage a nonprofit, which I love, but I've been priced out of the housing market.

Where is the economy better? Where is housing affordable? Where is a small to mid-size city that respects nature, loves dogs, and is genuinely friendly?
