i cant afford a new or even used repair stand and truing tool. i built a bootleg truing stand from and old fork and use the brake pads as a reference point. it works but only for non-disc front wheels. the stand i have now is actually a storage rack and it scuffs up the underside of the toptube. i want something that clamps the seat post.
is it possible to build a nice looking, functional repair and truing stand? i am willing to spend a few dollars but no more than $50 for the whole project.

Ivan Basso, the only rider ever to be able to compete with in LA in the mountains admitted yesterday his involvement in the Puerto scandal (blood transfusions of EPO that cannot be detected in the current state of scientific research). Sorry lads, the myth is now broken...

Any advice on biking with groceries? I have an old 15 speed with a rack on the back. I've been looking into panniers and backpacks to carry groceries back from the market (about 1 mile away). I found plenty of backpacks, but which to get is the question - hiking or day trip, and what size? Any suggestions? Thanks!

I am about to purchase a new bike finally! However, there is a small problem. As I am pedaling, I hear a weird noise. The noise the bike makes is something like a "click, click, click... clock". It sounds like it might be comming from the crank set area. I don't know if it is either coming from the chain, chainrings, front derrailure, or bottom bracket. Also, as I pedal, I can "feel" the noise (some resistance as I pedal). The guys at the bike shop where I got the bike said that the noise is normal and will go away once the bike is broken in. I never heard that it is normal for a new bike to make such a noise. Any suggestions and is it normal for a new bike to make such a horrible noise? Thanks

Few days old.....I thought disk brakes were supposed to have more stopping power than v brakes...but my back v brake will lock up and the front disk will only slow me down...doesnt lock up the wheel for stoppies...hmmmm and there is a wheel on the side of the caliper to adjust it to sit on the middle of the rotor....tried eyeballing this and adjusting it to many positions. This does not seem to help/hurt the braking power at all....Can I adjust the caliper...or the brake cable??? thanks!

I feel humbled - and offer apologies to capitaine flam:

From http://www.cyclingnews.com/news.php?id=news/2007/may07/may07news3

According to an official statement released by the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) on Monday, Ivan Basso has admitted to involvement in the Operación Puerto affair, and has agreed to cooperate with the CONI antidoping prosecutor. "The anti-doping prosecutor's office has heard Ivan Basso again today, who has largely confessed his responsibilities in the Puerto affair", the statement read.

i have a hardtail bike that i put slick tires on to ride in the city. i have heard that if you do not need the suspension in the city, you should lock them out and ride with the fork stiff, for speed. is this true? why would the stiff fork be faster? do i lose pedaling power when the fork squishes? it certainly does squish when i stand up and pedal hard. would i go faster if i lock it out?

I actually read the instructions that came with my new bike helmet. They say that, once you have adjusted and fastened the straps, you should not be able to lift the helmet so as to expose your entire forehead. But no matter how I adjust or tighten the helmet, I find that I can do exactly that (it won't come off the back of my head, however). I tried several other helmets and had the same problem.

My gear-head friends tell me that I shouldn't worry about it. Are they right, or do I need to get some kind of custom helmet for my bizarrely shaped head? :)

I bought a cheap bike from target this week. The sales lady told me that a 24" wheel is good for my height (5'2"). I just need the thing to practice so I didn't bother to argue. Plus I know nothing about bikes. I haven't ridden it outside yet but standing next to it now, I feel a bit ridiculous, especially since it says it's a girl's bike. I'm a 23 yr-old who's never had a bike before. I feel that it's safe for standing and reaching the ground. So should I return it and get a 26" or does it not matter?

Thanks.
