I actually read the instructions that came with my new bike helmet. They say that, once you have adjusted and fastened the straps, you should not be able to lift the helmet so as to expose your entire forehead. But no matter how I adjust or tighten the helmet, I find that I can do exactly that (it won't come off the back of my head, however). I tried several other helmets and had the same problem.

My gear-head friends tell me that I shouldn't worry about it. Are they right, or do I need to get some kind of custom helmet for my bizarrely shaped head? :)

Some helmets are just hard to fit to some heads. It varies from different model to model.

I like to tell people, it should be worn like a baseball cap (when worn by a baseball player, not a rapper). Low and tight across the forehead.

There are 2 straps around each ear. They join together in the buckles on each side. On each side, find the strap that goes in front of your ear and make it tighter, but leave the other strap (the one behind your ear) as it is.

If that doesn't work, see about adding extra foam pads. Or take it to a bike shop and get them to help you with it.

I had an extra large noggin (no jokes!) and lately I've had good luck with helmets that have an adjustable band that goes around your head. Bell and Giro use them on some of their models.

Here's a better fit tip: Put the helmet on your head, and do not fasten the chin strap. It should be snug, like a baseball cap, and not fall off your head when you lean forward.

Once you have that OK, then adjust your chin strap so that the sides meet about 1/2" below your earlobes and the strap is snug under your chin.

Keep in mind that different helmets fit different heads, and some companies make rounder ones while others are mroe oval. Try a bunch on at the bicycle shop and see which one works best.

There are some newer helmets that have what used to be called a Roc Bloc. I'm not sure what it's called generically, but it's a plastic extension to the helmet that keeps the helmet firmly on the head. The other thing to be sure of is that the front straps are tight. Try adjusting these so that equal tension is on the front and rear helmet straps.

it is meant to wiggle on your head, Many internet shops and helmet manufacturers have a sizing chart. an entire face helmet could be smaller on the neck line than the pinnacle length, that is only uncomfortable for a 2nd.
