Few days old.....I thought disk brakes were supposed to have more stopping power than v brakes...but my back v brake will lock up and the front disk will only slow me down...doesnt lock up the wheel for stoppies...hmmmm and there is a wheel on the side of the caliper to adjust it to sit on the middle of the rotor....tried eyeballing this and adjusting it to many positions. This does not seem to help/hurt the braking power at all....Can I adjust the caliper...or the brake cable??? thanks!

this particular bike comes with a Promax disc brake on the front-extremely cheap. you can adjust the centering of the rotor with the small red wheel, and on the back side of the campiler, there is a silver wheel that can be turned with a 5mm allen key. that is for the pad contact on the stationary pad. threading it in more means the pad moves closer to the rotor. you want this pad as close to the rotor as possible without touching it.
after that, adjust the cable tension and you should have a fairly tight feeling to the brake. you wont be able to do stoppies unless you shift your weight to the front while braking with these cheap brakes.

btw, the rear brakes account for about 30% of all the braking power on a bike so its quite easy to lock up the rear brake. Promax brakes just dont have the power to lock up the front. they were meant to imitate the style of better braking systems. i eventually bought a Tektro IO ($50) and that worked great.

good luck.

Where did you buy the bike? Biek shop? Sporting goods store. If you think it needs adjusting, try bringing it back. bike shops generally include adjustments for free.

Also, BE CAREFUL. Locking up the front brake can be dangerous. It's another terms for going over your handlebars.

I've had a Mongoose for 2 yrs. Have almost 10,000 miles on it. It stops on on a dime from day 1. Great bike. 24 speed, disks front and back. Oh. I did buy a new tube once.
