prefer singletrack, moderate technical difficulty, moderate climbing ok, views, scenery, rides "not to be missed" if one is in the SF area

Need a good shop with decent bikes--dual susp preferable--can't take my own
Can't be too much more than a 1/2 day round trip away--got business during working hours.
At this point, I won't have a car and will need to rely on public transport/cabs/shuttles.

Would consider getting a car for a spectacular ride, though

thanks in advance for help anyone can provide.

My wife and I picked up an AMF Pro Tour bicycle for free the other day. We would like to know when it was that AMF made bicycles and how old the bike we found is.

I am currently riding a 1998 Nishiki Blazer. It was a great bike that has a great frame, fairly light weight and very sturdy. For about the same price I can repair my bike correctly new high quality rims and tires, new seat a thurough tune up and possibly new gears. Or I can buy a relatively cheap bike. If I repair the bike correctly I will end up with a better overall bike but it is getting pretty old.
Please when answering tell me how much experience you have with bicycles.

Anybody have any idiots accelerate towards you, beep, then laugh at you and drive off whilst you are in a bloody mess on the pavement? Nursing an injured leg and an even more injured road bike?
Other people's experiences please

She loves to ride with stabilisers, and wants to ride her new one without them. All I can think of is holding her up with the saddle but she just leans onto that like she did with the stabilisers? Help!

I need to replace the bike seat and "post" that connects the seat to the bike. It is a Giant brand bike and it would be expensive to replace it with a name-brand item, i'd rather shop on ebay. Are the items universal as long as I get "an adult" size piece? Or does it have to be exact? If so, how can I figure out what size post I need?

There's no room for it in the middle of the frame, because I've got a lock hanging there. Can anyone suggest alternate methods of attaching the bottle cage to the bike, so I can stop just carrying my water around in my backpack?

Thoughts?

I just got a new bike and now I'm not sure what to do with my old one.

I'd give it to the Salvation Army or sumpin but man, it's very old and in pretty bad shape. I highly doubt they'd want it or could resell it, etc.

Anyone have any thoughts on what to do with the old one? Specifically speaking- how I can get rid of it? I doubt the recylcing center will take it and I'm reasonably sure the trash bin isn't the place for it.

Thoughts?
