There's no room for it in the middle of the frame, because I've got a lock hanging there. Can anyone suggest alternate methods of attaching the bottle cage to the bike, so I can stop just carrying my water around in my backpack?

Thoughts?

Think in the case of not having space for a water bottle, either buy a hydration kit, or get a runners bum bag, usually have two spaces and space for some kit, they're OK for on the bike and better than slinging something around your neck!

Is your lock on the seat tube (the tube that connects the seat to the pedals) or down tube (the tube that connects the headset to the pedals)? You can get water bottle cages that can be attached to either the seat tube, the down tube or the headset. You also might consider moving your lock, or not carrying it when you aren't going to be leaving your bike locked up somewhere.

Why does your bike need a water bottle? Does your bike get thirsty very often?? (j/k)

They do make hydration packs you can wear that have a "sipper" that you can attach to your shirt collar - I think Walmart carries them. Check that out as an option to the water bottle.

You can get a water bottle cage with straps and place it where you can or purchase a domestique which is a water bottle holder (usually holds two) and it goes under your seat and holds the bottles behind the seat.

A "Camelback" or other hydration backpack can be purchased at your local bike shop. Or, you can purchase a bracket that can be installed at the rear of your saddle, it can hold 2 bottles.
