I just got a new bike and now I'm not sure what to do with my old one.

I'd give it to the Salvation Army or sumpin but man, it's very old and in pretty bad shape. I highly doubt they'd want it or could resell it, etc.

Anyone have any thoughts on what to do with the old one? Specifically speaking- how I can get rid of it? I doubt the recylcing center will take it and I'm reasonably sure the trash bin isn't the place for it.

Thoughts?

I should point out that the bike in question is about 13 years old and not in terribly good shape. I really doubt a thrift store would take it and frankly I'd be worried about anyone using, even with a new chain and a tune up, etc. Nothing lasts forever I'm afraid and this bike's time has come. Now I'm just wondering how to get rid of it, short of tossing it in the trash (which would be difficult to do).

give a call or stop in to your local bike shop because there are more and more used bike shops popping up across the states. many of these shops offer programs to inner city kids with these bikes so many of the bikes are only there for trial and error repairs to new and inspiring mechanics.

There are actually used bike auction houses in some places, so if you have one nearby you can drop it off there. They'll see if anyone wants it, if no one wants it I guess after some time it gets thrown away, if someone does buy it well there you go, someone got themselves a cheap bike and you got rid of it, win-win :-)

I would put it out the night before they do "large trash" pickup in your neighborhood (assuming that your local community does this.) Someone will come by and pick it up or it will be thrown out. Either way, you don't have to worry about it anymore.

Good Luck!

You can set it up on a wind trainer and use it to train on bad weather days. I did this with a frame I broke. A little epoxy and I was good to go (nowhere!)

Polish it up.. Oil it.. Respray it.. And sell it to your local bike shop, or on ebay. Also, you could take it apart and sell the pieces seperately on ebay to people who are building their own bike.

put a ad on craiglist.com. it's free and just explain the shape it's in. if you want to set a price than set a price. Or you can just give it to a good home. one person's junk is another person's treasure.....right?

Try junking it at a junk yard, they may give you a few bucks for it. I mean literally, a few bucks but it's out of your hair and you can buy some gum or candy.

put it out for garbage the day after garbage day, if someone wants it-even for parts-it will be picked up or picked at....if no one takes it, well it really was junk and the garbage truck will pick it up.

try it out in a bike swop.... most bike shops have them where you can switch bikes with someone else... or else sell it to the shop.
