I need to replace the bike seat and "post" that connects the seat to the bike. It is a Giant brand bike and it would be expensive to replace it with a name-brand item, i'd rather shop on ebay. Are the items universal as long as I get "an adult" size piece? Or does it have to be exact? If so, how can I figure out what size post I need?

Seat posts range in size. With most common being 27.2 mm. There are 26.4, 27.0 etc. Do not guess, if the seatpost is too small and you try to ride on it, it can irreversably damage the frame. If it's too large, then obviously it will not fit. The way to go is to take the bike to a bikeshop, they will have a special measurment pipe that's inserted into the frame and tells you precise diameter. Seatposts are not cheap, but it would make sense to buy at the bike shop as well, rather than to wait for 2 weeks on ebay and save 10 bucks.
To prevent stolen seatpost get a special leash that goes on the seat and attaches to a frame ($6) or go for extra cool and secure Onguard seatpost skewer (usually $50 in a set along with two wheel skewers).

It has to be exact, there are no universal sized seatposts. A cheap alloy post probably runs 16-20 bucks at a bike shop and they can measure the frame to get the right size. You can probably find the bike's specs on the manufactures website. I know the 2006 models are there along with the specs. You may have to do some hunting for older models. You can probably contact Giant with the year and model of the bike to get the size also.

Just go to your local bike shop and see what they have... you can find the right parts to fit without having to spend too much on the exact name brand of the bike.

Most seat posts are universal. If the seat post doesn't fit your frame you can get what's called a schim that will fit over the seat post and make it fit in your frame.

just go steal someone elses seatpost! no they are not universal. yesterday i tried to put the seat and seatpost from my xc bike on my dirtjumper but it was to big for the seatube. which is weird cause i would have thought that the seattube of the dirtjumper would be bigger than the xc
