Depends on your definition of successor. Successor as a seven-time winner of the Tour de France? Nobody.

It looks as though Ivan Basso of Italy is ready to become the next dominant force in world cycling. He has had 2 very good years. Basso finished 3rd in 2004 and 2nd in 2005 in the Tour de France - much closer than Lance's highly-publicized chief rival, Jan Ullrich of Germany. Basso can climb the mountains and is a serious threat in any time trial.

If you were asking about the next American heir apparent, Levi Leipheimer - with two Top 10 overall finishes in the last two Tour de France events - would be our best bet. But keep your eyes on Floyd Landis and George Hincapie (Lance's best finishing Tour de France teammate from Team Discovery Channel).

If you're talking of the Grand Tours, I would say either Basso or Salvotelli. If you're talking Discovery, I would like to see Hincapie but doubt that will happen as he's a better lieutenant. Vinokourov, if he lands on the right team, could also be a contender for the titles.

Should be fun to watch and see who takes control.

Dont think anyone will have the same dominance as ol' lance did.
Re this years tdf - im with Basso, failing that Ullrich or some other strong team member (CSC)

Re lance - it is SEVEN actually!

Time will tell. I don't think there is currently anyone that will dominate. I'd look for some young guys this year in the Tour de France and keep an eye on them. Can't wait for July 1.
