24 vs 26 generlly refers to the wheel size.

Usually a 24" bike is for children that are too big for a childs bike, but too small for an adult bike. I would definitely go with 26" wheels (standard mtn bike wheel) and go to a bike shop and get a properly fitted frame. If you want to ride a road bike instead of a mtn bike, the wheels are commonly 27", and again you would want to get fitted for a small woman's bike frame. Another reason to go with the 26" wheels is that if you ride with other people, you would have to pedal that much more faster to be able to keep up because each rotation of the wheel covers less distance. This is one reason why a road bike can generally go faster than a mtn bike.

A 26" bike would be good for you as long as you get a small frame for your height. If you are looking for a mountain bike, then I suggest either a 14" or 16" frame. This depends on your inseam and if your going to get a mans bicycle. The reason for this size frame is due to the top bar of the bicycle. You want at least a 1" clearance when you stradle the frame for safety.

the best thing to do would be go to where ever you are planning on getting a bike, and just try all the sizes till you find the right bike.. I'm a 5"8 and I always go for a tall bike, but make sure you can touch the ground.... There are different styles,,different brakes, seats...

Wow... just a note if your ordering on-line or by catalog so you cannot go just try the size of the bike you want...Walmart is a great place to just go in and try sizes...

;)

I'd get a 26 inch - I'm 5'3" & have a 29 inch inseam & my sons' 26 inch bike fits me just right. Try both at the store, tho - if you're getting a girls' bike as opposed to a boy's bike the crossbar will make a difference.

26" is the wheel length, no longer the bike length. They attempt this because no one which works at Walmart is familiar with some thing about motorcycles. The bike length is often taken through measuring from the middle of the bottom bracket to the properly of the seat tube. I incredibly recommend no longer procuring a bike there. when I worked at a save, we used to can charge double or triple to service Walmart motorcycles because they were so badly assembled it took so a lot more desirable artwork to get them fastened. you're more desirable suitable off procuring a attractiveness style bike used then you actually are procuring a clean bike from Walmart.

Both are probably way too big (tall) for you.

I'm 5'8 (with a 34" pant inseam) and ride a 24" bike.
