If you are going to a sporting goods store, then Diamondback will be the better choice. I wholeheartedly disagree with the answer about lack of parts or other stuff since the vast majority of bikes use parts from common suppliers.

Diamondback is part of Raleigh USA and it is common that the only difference between a Raleigh and a Diamondback is the name and the price. On top of that ALL DB techs regardless of where they work are supposed to go through training. I know this because I used to train them.

Bottom line is, you will NOT get a true mountain bike for $500. Instead, you will get a higher end ATB, or "all terrain bike". These are intended for on the road and trails with rain ruts and smaller obstacles, not for super technical terrain or downhilling.

If you are looking at a Schwinn from a discount store like Walmart or Target, forget it. If you are looking at a sporting goods store be sure to carefully compare construction and grade of components and ignore the brand. I would make sure that the place you purchase is NOT Sports Authority or Garts, but Dick's Sporting Goods is OK.

Costco sells department store bikes just like Walmart does. You do not want a full suspension bike that is that cheap. They will be heavy and the shocks will be junk. You would be much better off and a lot happier with a hard tail bike from a bike shop. Bike shop bikes come in different frame sizes, department stop bikes don't. You should be able to find a good used FS bike for $400 on the local ebay or Craig's list. I have ridden cheap FS bikes and they eat up so much energy they are no fun to ride.

Schwinn is a piece of sh*t!! Don't listen to those people! Get a diamond back...if you had a larger budget you could get a better bike..

I feel safer getting a Schwinn bikes because parts wear out and need to replace them like tires, brakes, gear shifter. I don't know about Diamonback though.

I would take that $500 and go to a bike shop rather than a large discount store if that is where you are shopping. You will get a better bike assembled by professionals, not stockroom staff. Additionally, adjustments are included and warranties are better.
