It seems to fit but I haven't tried to air it up. I got the tubes free but don't know what will happen if I use them.

I'm a bike mechanic and it will work fine. If it was a bigger range then it would be more of a problem due to the fact that you would have a bunch of extra tube hanging out and there would be a bigger chance for a pinch.

If I was on the trail with a flat 26 X 2.3 tire and somebody gave me the small tube I wouldn't hesitate to install it and inflate it.

Nothing bad will happen if you inflate the tire. You'd be surprised how large you can blow up the tubes before they explode....I'm talking like a good 5" diameter. I imagine that over time the tube won't last as long as it is being stretched further than it was designed.

It is close enough to the 1.9 that it will work fine.

I even hear of people riding 29" wheels using 26" tubes.

It should work just fine. I've had 700 x 23 tubes work in a 700 x 32 tire with no problem.

you can use that tube for that tire, it just stretches the rubber farther to compensate for the increased tire size. it wouldnt be a good ides to use it for a long period of time, but if its a temporary fix, then you'll be just fine.
a new tube costs $5, would you be willing to spare that much to make sure you dont have an accident on the trail?

It'll work, and even be lighter. But the rubber will be stretched a little thinner than normal inside the tire and be less resistant to flats. That's it.
