As a person would have to hit the lotto of every state, everyday, for a million years to come close to the odds of an entire universe and life within that universe spontaneously generating from unknown origins.

I like to debate with bible thumpers about the existence of god and creationism vs evolution. Any info you could share with me and your other fellow atheists to spread the word of common sense would be greatly appreciated. Can the christians please stay out of this for a change? I doubt it...

then does that mean they weren't really Christians? Because people keep telling me you can't believe in god without reading and embracing the bible.

How about Jesus's Disiples and his followers - they were the first Christians, but they didn't have a bible yet - the first books of the bible weren't written for another 60 years. The bible itself wasn't compiled until 325 AD by the Council of Nicea, as ordered by Emperor Constantine, another one who considered himself quite the Christian and in fact made it the state religion -- I guess by the logic of needing a bible to be a christian, then they weren't actually christians.

What say you?

Their demands for one-liner scientific explanations of issues like Creation, Evolution and the Big Bang don't satisfy them.

If you want a worthwhile scientific understanding of these things, you need to read, study and understand them.

A good start on Evolution would be "The Double Helix" by James Watson, one of the discoverers of DNA. Follow that up with Richard Dawkins "The Selfish Gene" and "The Blind Watchmaker"

If you want to understand the Big Bang theory, then look up the science on Background Temperature Radiation, and read Hawkings "Brief History of Time"

even those books are pop-science, they scratch the surface of what you would learn in a degree.

And even if you reached a degree level of understanding, you would only have a general awareness of the broad issues and some problem solving skills.

So...why are you surprised that one liners aren't getting you anywhere?

(1) Do you regularly converse with your god? This means a 2-way conversation between you and your god, not just you speaking.
(2) Do you recall the tone of the voice of your god? I mean the literal tone, not metaphorical.
(3) What was the last thing he said to you and when?

Thanks for your sincere answers for a sincere inquirer. Please do not forget to tell me what your religion is.

Wouldnt you have doubts about it, when you consider than if you had been brought up in a different country, you would be pushed into adopting the accepted faith there? It might be all that you know. For example, children being taught that memorizing the Koran is the most worthwhile activity they are capable of.

Its not like a child is educated about all the major religions and then makes a choice. The choice is made for them by their cultural environment.

Does this unsettle a religious person? I can imagine if I was religious I would find it hard to grapple with this idea.

Okay, I asked a friend about Mormon faith and he told me that Mormons believe Jesus was conceived by Mary and a god-like holy man. Not God though.
Is that true?

Sorry. I am ignorant about your church, but will openly admit it.

I'm curious regarding this philosophy. I was Christian for 22 years and fell away about a year ago. Lately, I have broken nearly completely away. I'm still attracted to Christianity, however.

Are we only saved if we believe in Jesus, or are we saved forever if we once believed in Jesus?

past. But I've been praying for some money to come my way for some time, but instead I'm getting bad news every day. Right now I'm very mad at God, because I keep praying for a miracle that doesn't happen. I'm so discourage, I don't even go to church anymore. Today I even say god hates me, he is racist, and he chooses who he wants to get money. Why people who do bad things, as a matter of fact, people who don't believe in him are rich, while us who are glorifying him are struggling to pay our bills? The Bible says God is a rich God, why us he calls his children are not rich? Do I have the right to be mad? As a Christian, do you ever feel forgotten by God?

Hi, my name is Phil

Just wondering... Is saying "I believe" just out of fear of hell really going to ensure salvation...

It seems to me as though Pascal's Wager is simply used as some kind of insurance policy....

I don't know about you, but I'd rather not think of the Lord Jesus as an insurance policy that you stuff in your pocket and bring out at Christmas?

Shouldn't you believe out of love for Jesus instead of ultimate fear of hell? Is that really *believing*?

The Old Testament spoke of a place for the Faithful, Saints who believed. The letter to the Hebrews chap 10&11; Revelation also speaks of this place. Jesus during the 3 days after being crucified and before walking out early Sunday; fought Lucifer. He was fighting demanding and taking the deed and keys away from him allowing all who dwelt there to be free to enter Heaven. Is this where some have come to believe, there is a purgatory?

Why did the Catholic church not include the Gnostic Gospels into the Bible. Certain things are evident in the Gnostic Gospels and these are:

1. Mary Magdelene was an apostle of Christ.

2. Mary was Christ's favourite apostle and he taught her the most.

3. Peter was very jealous of Mary.

4. Mary was also Christ's lover.

5. Judas was asked by Christ to betray him which he did. He was just following Christ's wish.

6. Christ preached that all you had to do was keep God in your heart i.e. You don't need a religion to worship God.

No wonder the Gnostic Gospels were not included in the Bible . . .

There is no concrete evidence that the Canonical Gospels are true and there is no evidence that the Gnostic Gospels are true. So which do you believe and why? Please avoid emotions or feelings - reasons only please....
