There was a man called him Jim, who lived near a river.

Jim was a very religious man.

One day, the river rose over the banks and flooded the town, and Jim was forced to climb onto his porch roof.

While sitting there, a man in a boat comes along and tells Jim to get in the boat with him.

Jim says "No, that's ok. God will take care of me."

So, the man in the boat drives off.

The water rises, so Jim climbs onto his roof.

At that time, another boat comes along and the person in that one tells Jim to get in.

Jim replies, "No, that's ok. God will take care of me."

The person in the boat then leaves.

The water rises even more, and Jim climbs on his chimney.

Then a helicopter comes and lowers a ladder. The woman in the helicopter tells Jim to climb up the ladder and get in.

Jim tells her "That's ok."

The woman says "Are you sure?"

Jim says, "Yeah, I'm sure God will take care of me.

Finally, the water rises too high and Jim drowns.

If you say yes why? If you say no why do you say so? I'm going to pretend like I don't have an opinion, so feel free to answer however you want.

“The peril is that the human intellect is free to destroy itself. Just as one generation could prevent the very existence of the next generation, by all entering a monastery or jumping into the sea, so one set of thinkers can in some degree prevent further thinking by teaching the next generation that there is no validity in any human thought. It is idle to talk always of the alternative of reason and faith. Reason is itself a matter of faith. It is an act of faith to assert that our thoughts have any relation to reality at all. If you are merely a sceptic, you must sooner or later ask yourself the question, "Why should anything go right; even observation and deduction? Why should not good logic be as misleading as bad logic? They are both movements in the brain of a bewildered ape?" The young sceptic says, "I have a right to think for myself." But the old sceptic, the complete sceptic, says, "I have no right to think for myself. I have no right to think at all." –G.K. Chesterton

When someone that you trusted and loved, (in this case,my mom) lies about you?

I recently became aware that my mother has lied and said absolutly dreadful things about myself and my children.(all grown women). I was told by another member of the family that they never want to have contact with us again.

I am devastated by this. And while I can live without seeing my family again, I know that this hurts my kids about their grandma...and that they would want their children to see their great grandma.

Let's say you are single and in your thirties. You are the last atheist left. For those of us whom might say this question is bizarre, remember this is readily acknowledged as a purely hypothetical situation.

Would you choose to remain single or would you find a spouse with a religion?
If so which religion would you better put up with or be? (Jews, Christians, Catholics, Mormons, Scientologists, Wiccans, Spiritists,Taoists, Buddhists, Shintoists, Sikhs, Hindus, Muslims, etc.)

I'm rather skeptical, though I try to keep an open mind about paranormal matters. There is a $1 million reward for anyone who can prove that he/she has psychic ability. Sylvia Browne and John Edward have refused to take this challenge, so I was wondering if there was anyone who was brave enough to do so.

Its very clear that a lot of people have misconceptions, I too had them. A lot of them spring up on these boards.

Catholics pray to mary.
Catholics believe their works will save them.
Purgatory can be lessened for a fee.

I mean its all so stupid, I read what people write and I shudder. People like that come across as being bery stupid. Not because I disagree with them (I can argue most of this from both sides) however it just shows a lack of knowledge, research, understanding.

So in an effort to clear things up lets list misconceptions that people have and then list what the real truth is, that might help people out a lot.

Now if someone explains something its pretty stupid to refute that based on your own belief.

So if someone explains how Catholics do not actualy pray to mary but ask for her prayers dont turn around and say "oh yes you do" because you come across as a fool!

I hate quoting scriptures because it sounds so lame but…

Hebrews 7:1 For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him;

Hebrews 7:2 To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace;

Hebrews 7:3 Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually.

So powerful Spiritual guy, now compare Mel to an enlightened Christian.

John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name:

John 1:13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

I'm talking about a 6 at the beginning, 6 in the middle, and a 6 in the end. Basically, any combination of three 6's in your credit cards (or other types of membership cards).

According to religious people and futurists, what is this supposed to mean?

This passage from Ecclesiastes comes from the Sunday readings of Aug 5th, 2007:

"Here is one who has labored with wisdom and knowledge and skill, and yet to another who has not labored over it,
he must leave property. This also is vanity and a great misfortune."

I don't really understand the literal meaning of these two sentences. Why does the first person have to leave property to the second? What property? What does it mean by "this ALSO is vanity"?

Thanks so much!

I don't understand why its such a bad thing. I grew up being taught that God created everything and that he loved everyone. Then I learn later in life (from my mother and her prejudice rambles) that she thinks God hates gay people, the devil created them, and that they were all headed for hell. I want someone to explain this ludacris thing to me.
Let me just add that see no reason why gay people shouldnt be able to get married, be happy together, and then when they do die go to heaven.

I'm not a religious person, but something my partner said to me has intrigued me. She's not religious either but has heard this... It's something to do with the jews being aloud to build a temple, maybe the UN, a mark on the left hand (id tags?) all christians and children vanishing from the face of earth, 7 years of hell on earth, survival of the fittest....all very scary! Any ideas?

1- Sunni Brothers? How do you say that Shia have a different Quran while Allah protected the Quran from Alteration, Modification, Addition?

"Lo! We, even We, reveal the Reminder, and lo! We verily are its Guardian. " 15:9

2- Shia brothers, how can you say that the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم is infallible, Then say his companions like Omar and Abubakr were Bad? Was he Decieved during his life? Was he "wrong" to choose such companions?

3- If the 2 questions above are logically wrong.. Can't we ignore them and stand together as real men against our real enemy as Muslims?

Evil exists in the world. It’s undeniable. And if God is all good, all knowing and all powerful, why does evil and suffering exist? Because this means God has the power rid the world of evil and suffering, knows how to rid the world of evil and suffering and wants to rid the world of evil and suffering, but doesn’t. I conclude God doesn’t exist. Disagree with me and make an argument. Best argument gets 10 points.

I have been thinking about this. I left the catholic church a long time ago, I thought that it was irrelevant and "dead" I thought that I had found "life: in Assemlies of God and later Baptist churches.

I always considered that Catholicism was about "religion" while the othere were more "personal relationship with Jesus"

The truth was that the MASS is not the alternative to a CHURCH SERVICE, I think they are very different in what they are about.

For someone who is spiritual but doesnt like (or mostly understand) ritual the protestant movement is very welcoming, because it is often made to be exactly like a social group. Meet friends, drink coffee, eat doughnuts, sing songs, listen to the funny preacher. So it is welcoming, sincere and often focused on God.

The question is, is that enough. Some Catholic churches have similar groups not all. But central is the Mass. Protestants dont have that and have for some reason decided to completly ignore writings of church leaders.
