The English word sin derives from Old English synn., recorded in use as early as the 9th century.

The Greek word hamartia (ἁμαρτία) is usually translated as sin in the New Testament; it means "to miss the mark" or "to miss the target.

So actually the bible should say that if you miss the mark you go to "hell," and that is "Geenna," or Gehenna, which refers to the valley of Hinnom in Jerusalem which was a refuse dump where the bodies of criminals and other "no-goods" were typically thrown to burn up instead of having a decent burial.

I'm not sure, I think I should be but Im not 100% sure. I was born catholic but my parents made me leave that sect of christanity when i was about 10. I was converting to judaism when someone on my campus started talking (not even about religion) and I went to the catholic bible study. Im not sure what I believe and dont want to waste people's time.

That if someone falls away from the Lord, and never looks back, they were never truly saved to begin with? That this was a false conversion? Look at the parable of the sower in Luke for example....
Now many christians do backslide, but the Holy Spirit convicts them, and they do know they are in the wrong, that they are in sin....that is the difference between having the Holy Spirit and not having it. If you do not have the Holy Spirit you are not saved. See Ephesians 1 and 2 Corinthians 1:21-22 --this question is geared to those who say you do lose your salvation. You do NOT lose your salvation if you are TRULY saved- if it is a true conversion. Those that you believe did lose their salvation were just never saved to begin with- For God promises His Holy Spirit to us who are saved. And I am eternally thankful for the Lord! I would never want to slip off his narrow path! Matthew 22:14
For many are called, but few are chosen."

I'm just wondering:

You know those emails you get that tell you the phone will ring, or something uproariously funny will pop onto your screen or you will find your true love within a week as long as you forward the email to seven of your friends?

Has any of that stuff ever happened? No, right? So why do you keep forwarding those friggin' emails? Is this the thing known as "Faith"?

To start, I do believe that there is a higher being but I believe a lot in science evolution, the big bang theory.. but someone had to start it all, right? Anyways, the thing that gets me about Christianity, Catholicism more than any other religion actually, is how can you believe that the stories in the bible are true and not made up by someone? I have to have some kind of proof that the stories are real in order to believe them but how can I if there is no proof? I need actual physical proof that the things written about in the bible actually took place.

I was raised in a very legalistic religion and have "Thank God" gotten away from that, but since then I just can't even force myself to attend church. I love God and still talk with Him daily, but I want no part of church. I worry about this b/c I have three children and I know that I learned alot about the Bible when I was a child. Has anyone experienced what I am going through?

....If I'm actually going to do this wedding ceremony....

What do you think of this introduction:

"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here (wherever we are), in the sight of God, (or no God, or, "Maybe" a God - whatever the case may be...) - and whether you believe that He or She exists or not, and if He or She really does, whether you call Him or Her God or Yahweh or Jesus or Allah or Krishna or Buddha or Great Spirit or Goddess or Vishnu or Dr. Phil - - to join this man and this woman....etc." ???

Suggestions?

Congratulations for finding your way into the myriad of religions that fall into the broad category of Pagan.

Please note that if your gods are real, the Abrahamic god cannot be real as described by those who refer to him as singular, omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent and jealous.

If their god is real and as described by them, the god of Abrahamicists like Christians would be the only god.

You and I know he is not.

I know it is very, very hard to seem like the big meanie. I know that you want tolerance and peace and to show your love for your fellow theists, but the fact remains that when you say your gods are as real as the Christian one, you're pretty much saying neither exist.

And if you think neither exist, that's fine, but you should say so...

And if you think they all exist, but Christians just get a lot of their stuff wrong about their god, you should say that, too.

Just wondering. Why the equation?

I cannot find this term in the dictionary.

Would you please use it in a sentence?

Would this term be an accurate description of the concept called “creation science”?

I was raised a Christian by a Lutheran mother and a Seventh Day Adventist father, however, I was always taught that religion was a matter of private conscience and that it is important for a civil society to respect other people's beliefs even if I don't agree with them. To paraphrase Jefferson: My neighbor may have no gods or twenty gods it neither breaks my leg nor picks my pocket.

1. Why is it so hard for some atheists (esp. some Yahoo! users) to accept that no matter what they do or say there will always be those who believe in a god/higher power?

2. Why is it so hard for some people of faith (again esp. some Yahoo! users) to accept that no matter what they do or say there will always be those who choose not to believe in a god/higher power?
