I was raised a Christian by a Lutheran mother and a Seventh Day Adventist father, however, I was always taught that religion was a matter of private conscience and that it is important for a civil society to respect other people's beliefs even if I don't agree with them. To paraphrase Jefferson: My neighbor may have no gods or twenty gods it neither breaks my leg nor picks my pocket.

1. Why is it so hard for some atheists (esp. some Yahoo! users) to accept that no matter what they do or say there will always be those who believe in a god/higher power?

2. Why is it so hard for some people of faith (again esp. some Yahoo! users) to accept that no matter what they do or say there will always be those who choose not to believe in a god/higher power?

Christians destroyed with the "moral majority" crap

It is the monotheistic faiths (Christianity, Judaism, Islam) which insist that there is but one god, that the only god is their god, and that everyone else is wrong about god. That approach does not create much space for tolerance!

On the other hand, those world religions which have more than one god (Hinduism, Buddhism, etc) are generally far more tolerant. They are prepared to believe that there is room for many approaches to a higher power.

I am not suggesting anyone is right or wrong. It's just interesting that belief in a single god seems to go along with intolerance.

By the way: take a look at all recent wars and you will find that virtually all of them involve Christians, Muslims or Jews telling other people they're wrong.

religion has always been sacred if you will to society, especially in the past. And given that religion was very dominate in the past and numerous attempts to stop people from wanting to learn about science and talk about science; such as the catholic church punishing Galileo for stating that the sun is the center of our solar system and not planet earth.

Since religion has been so drilled into us that those of us who still believe in such things as a guy with a white beard will do what they have to in order to keep their faith.

While the non-believers realize the many fallacies of religion and that it has done more harm than good will try to convince people to let go of thinking in ancient times and to be more open-minded.

The war between believers and non-believers will continue

I'm pretty sure religious faith will be around for a long time but it is declining slowly.
Otherwise I agree with you.

That has nothing to do with religious intolerance.

Religious tolerance means that they won't kill you, when you fail to submit their God.

Having an open discussion and wanting people to see your side is just an ego thing. No one gets killed.

The bornagainers have to convert the heathens so heaven will fill up. Nonbelievers need to convert the spritual nuts so it won't.

Monotheism happened.

It will always result in one-wayism in the end.
