At a dinner party, one of the guests feels they have the right to say they don't like the music I have on in the background. I go to the bathroom, and when I come back, I find that they have changed the music to something they like. That happened to me once, I tolereated that behaviour on that occasion, and never invited rhat person again. Could I have done anything at the time without ruining the atmosphere for the other guests?

A free chat room that demands your real name and if you are banned and want back in, they want a signed document from your counselor(Most cases nothing is wrong with you and you don't need a counselor) or psyciatrist in order for you to come back in. This is a Christian chatroom.

Is this wrong?

I have to often ask co-workers to do something for me. What is the best tactful phrasing to use to ensure it does get done? One that's not a "suggested" action but not an order either? Is there a better way over e-mail or IM vs in person or on the phone?

Recently I met the Queen at a social function, all was going well, all was going well, I thought, until she let out the worst smelling fart of all time. I mean it was rank and quite turned my stomach and I vomited there and then. Unfortunately, some of the vomit went on to her clothes and I was so embarrassed I didn't know what to do or say so I just turned and walked off quickly.

I manage a restaurant(a fast food one), and just yesterday, I was called several abusive names whilst trying to resolve a customer issue(I am ALWAYS 100% professional and polite), and was shouted at so much by one person who rang up to complain that I hung up on them, a first for me as I can normally take whatever the disgustingly mannered public can throw at me, after ten years of doing this.

However, I am always amazed when I go into over places and hear people complain, they are so much more reserved and polite, where as me and my other managers are often subject to personal attacks and appalling language. What is wrong with people that they think they can talk to us this way?

This is my third baby but I was never given a shower for my previous two so we had to make due with the barest essentials that we could afford from thrift stores/yard sales. Now my first is 7 and second is 5 and all we have are a few things a friend recently gave us. While I can make due with just essentials like before, I'd really like to have some of the nice to have items but I'm worried it would look tacky to register for them since most people will know this is my third but won't know the history. It seems most people assume I've had 1 or 2 showers already. My husband's work and my friend are co-hosting a shower. I have no idea who should be invited (we have no family to invite...just friends and acquaintences) or what I should register for (my friend asked me to). Who should be invited? What should I register for? Just the essentials or include things I'd like to have as well?

I could just say it and RUN LIKE SNOT but I don't think that will help the situation.

I'm seeing more and more that my mom and siblings are racist toward certain people groups. I won't mention who the groups are because it's not relevant to the question. The fact of the matter is she doesn't think she's being racist because she feels like our people have been through enough. Plus, because her life sucks, so should everyone else's. I have 2 brothers and 3 sisters who believe and are raising their kids the same way because our mom did it that way.

I've tried talking to her, but it's tough because she's VERY negative. For her, if there's nothing to complain about, there's nothing to talk about. Besides, if you hurt my mom's feelings, my brother will pummel you!!! I know because I've seen him do it before!!!

Do you understand my situation? I have a mom, 2 brothers and 3 sisters who are not mature at all and they're only hurting themselves and everyone around them.

I am a EFL (English as a foreign language) textbook writer and currently working on a unit on politeness and etiquette. While I have found some material, I'd always love to hear more about what is considered polite or rude in different cultures. For example: questions or subjects that are considered taboo, how close or far people stand from each other, etc. I'm especially interested in answers from English-speaking countries other than the U.S.

Thanks so much!

Sometimes I'm walking outside or in a long, long hallway, and a few dozen feet away, I see someone I know walking towards me. They also see me. We wouldn't have any intention of stopping for a conversation, but it would be rude not to acknowledge each other when passing.

What do I do from the time I first see my friend at a great distance to the time we pass each other?

Do I pretend I don't see them until we're a reasonable distance away, then at about 8 feet say, "Hey, what's up?" smile wave and pass? Do I wave the very first moment we see each other, then make no other movement until we're closer, then give a quick "Hi" as we pass? Do we just smile and wave at each other the whole time? Or do I just make an elaborate show at looking at my watch, acting surprised at the time, and run away?

Sometimes when a person comes to my house, I know they're here before they knock on the door. For example, I'll hear the car. Now the question is, should I go ahead and open the door before they even walk up to my house, or should I hide like I don't know they're there and wait until they knock to open the door?

This happens most often with my friend who comes by car to visit, and the package-delivering person.

My family is from India so I am not sure if this is cultural or not but my 16 year old brother Vijay was masturbating to a picture of Britneys no panties pic online. We are a devout Hindu family of the highest caste. I I found it repulsive he was masturbating and a to a white girl at that, and I am his 18 year old sister. Where can I buy a filter for a computer? He tells me always masturbates to white women only. I got so mad when I heard this!!!!!!!

He just won't let up. Is he so insecure that he has to be in the news 24/7? And now to bring his wife and daughter in this? What kind of morals does this idot have? And he's even a wimp that he can't fight his own battles.

Please, only answer if you've actually seen the New York subway system. I'm asking in reference to this story I read on Yahoo! news : http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070107/ap_on_re_us/hero_aftermath

How far or how hard would it be to lift/drag/pull (or whatever you would have to do, you can tell me what) a grown man (say 150-180 lbs) to safety? I just feel like, in the same situation, I would like to help someone in that situation, and would probably end up not being strong enough and end up looking like an idiot by getting myself killed too. Worse, I might realize my mistake and jump back out, and survive while the poor man who fainted dies, and then get called a coward or something. What do I do?! Lucky I don't live in New York, I guess.

I totally forgot my friends 16th birthday and i remembered it at the last minute and so i had to put together a party in 10 minutes before she came over to my house. So i didnt have any presents for her andso i had to give her things that i already had in my house and i gave her things like a half bottle of prefume, some cds that i had and some old clothes that i had. I decorated the house with things that were just lying around the house like some string and paper. So she came over and everything was going fine she didnt suspect a thing until one of my friends blurted out this is pretty good for someone who put this together in 10 minutes. And i was mad she revealed it and she found out i forgot her birthday and she was like you forgot my birthday?I cant believe you could do this to me and i was like whatever your just jealous cause i look better than you and then she was like you think im jealous? You dont know me at all and then she left.I feel bad for ruing her party wat should i do
