Even when greeted cordially, they're still dang RUDE.

They hate their job

Probably a lot of reasons that contribute to this:
1. First of all, it's a stereotype that people tend to have about them. This causes people who go to the DMV to have expectations about the employees there and this can influence their interactions. Also, they may be in a rush or stressed; this could be mistaken as rudeness.
2. Boring (having to do same thing every day), but demanding job (dealing with people who may not be the nicest or most polite) could make anyone a little edgy.
3. Customer service isn't as big of an issue for the DMV, as say, a regular business who is competing for your business with other companies. You have to renew your license, and the DMV is the "only show in town."

They are government employees. They have no competition and nothing to strive for. Think about it- a grocery store needs to provide friendly service so that you don't take your business to the competitors. A government run business has no competition. You can't take your money to another DMV if they treat you badly. You are forced to use their services, no matter how they treat you. And yes, the employees are aware of this and typically make no effort to make the experience any pleasanter for you.

I know that a job like that is rough. There are a number of people that come in there each and every day that are RuDe to them and they tend to react the same way toward others. Just ignore it and be as friendly as you can. Realize that they have had a rough week the last 50 weeks in a row and be glad that you and I do not have to be in there meeting all of the unfriendly people that they do. Have a great Lord's Day!

Because they are generally working in a fast paced environment that is usually packed. For them to be nice would envoke friendly conversation which in turn would take some time and irk the people waiting in line....therefore if they just treat everyone like they're an assembly line with no emotion they can go home happier people.
Also they work for the State and have great job security because they are backed by a Union.
Please don't take it personally when a State employee treats you like dirt..just thank goodness that you don't have to work with them!!

Because those government jobs aren't as wonderful as everybody seems to think. Plus, even though you are cordial, the 50 people before you just got through treating this guy like he is their indentured servant because they pay taxes and feel like anyone that works in government OWES them something.

So, while it's not necessarily right that this person is rude to you when you are trying to be nice, know that it probably isn't anything personal against you.

I didn't think they were so rude. The place is usually crowded and most people that go there are a pain.

I think the main problem is that State employees tend to be clueless. I want to know who the manager is in those places. The people aren't professional and usually sit there chatting amongst each other instead of trying to be efficient.

Perhaps because so many people come in are already rude (in a hurry, waited until the last day to renew, etc) and the employees merely tend to reflect the customer's own rudeness. Or maybe many of them hate doing the same boring thing day after day.

They're in a dead end job and have to deal with people all day. You might be nice, but the people before you could have been jerks. That's the bad part though is that people who deal with the public like this tend to view everyone as the same after a while.

Because they are state employees and think they have great power. And no one likes to go to the DMV....so they deal with a lot of grumpy people and bad drivers!

It's because they're overworked, underpaid, and have to deal with people being mean, snobby and rude all day long. They don't typically mean to be rude to people, but they are so tired of being picked on from the State and from the drivers that often they vent without realizing it.
