My parents tell me "There are kids in the neighbourhood." I think that it's worse for them to see me smoking than for them to see me sans shirt. I just like to be comfortable. Geez. What do you think?

I don't think it is a big deal.

Not neccessarily rude, but might be unpleasant for some people who see you - sorry you might be Brad Pitt (insert favourite hot body here) but maybe not. And yes its probably worse for kids to see you smoking than shirtless. Why arent your parents worried about the "grannies in the neighbourhood"? ;)

I don't think it's "rude", but you might be better off putting on a shirt. It would just make you look trashy. If you are smoking, that is a social stigma in itself, and if you do it without your shirt on, people are going to pass even more judgement on you. Why attract the extra attention? Just slip on a shirt. If you absolutely oppose to that, go ahead and do your thing, just know it might cast a negative light on your parents. Hope this helps.
PS--I am not implying that you are trashy (I too, unfortunately, am a smoker), please don't take it that way. It is just how others might view it.

I agree with the person who said it isn't rude, exactly, but some people would consider it low class. As for the people who are saying, "it might bother people, but it's your right," ... look up the question on whether our culture is becoming more disrespectful. If it bothers (and probably embarrasses) your parents, why not stop doing it in order to be considerate of them?

While your neighbors probably don't wish to see you shirtless and smoking, it's your right. Just as what they do at their home is their right even if you may not agree with something that they do but happen to witness.

it depends on how obese you are or how displeasing otherwise you are to the eye.

I don't think there's anything wrong with it otherwise. For instance, if you look like this: http://www.corvetteforum.net/c4/ozvette/cover.jpg

But if you look like this: http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g219/Dwilkers/1_ugly_people.jpg

Then you shouldn't even show your face outside, let alone anything else.

Also, you have to be careful on the balcony, because if you fall you could end up looking like this: http://cache.bordom.net/images/32817491d9080f6023e88b30356b7b7d.jpg
