Sometimes when a person comes to my house, I know they're here before they knock on the door. For example, I'll hear the car. Now the question is, should I go ahead and open the door before they even walk up to my house, or should I hide like I don't know they're there and wait until they knock to open the door?

This happens most often with my friend who comes by car to visit, and the package-delivering person.

... and if I open the door before they reach it, wouldn't that startle them?

You spend a lot of time worrying about things that are completely irrelavent. What you should worry about is why you don't seem to have anything better to do with your time than sit around worrying about this kind of BS.

When Someone comes over to my house and I hear them pull up in the drive way. I go out and greet them. If you don't actually hear them come up then don't worry till they knock if you do hear them then come out and see if they need help or anything like that.

If they don't then just walk them to the door, talk with them then hold the door open for them in an inviting manor. It's always good to greet a guest before they reach the door if you hear them come up. That is if you own your own house if you live in an apartment then it is best to wait beside the door with the door open.

Most times when you go over to someones house you always get the feeling that they might be busy or might not be home so if you go outside and greet them then they feel more at ease with coming in. I know that I don't like Knocking on ppls doors and would perfer them to greet me before the door considering the door spaces really isn't a good place for converstation and I feel more at ease because I know that they aren't busy and they can invite me in.

It is always best to try and meet someone that is coming over either with an open door or walking out to meet them. That way they feel more special and they feel as if you had been waiting on them to show up. I have nerve problems and when I go to visit my friend I am afraid that she might be busy or knocking on the door might disturb her dog which barks everytime some one taps on her door.

The same can be said for me. I would rather meet people before they had the chance to knock on the door because I have a 2yr old that takes naps and wakes up at the drop of a pin and I like to greet ppl at the door so that I can tell them to try and be as quite as possible.

I think its perfectly fine that you go and answer the door before your friends come and knock, it means you have been waiting for them anxiously and it would seem more welcoming.
As for the package delivering person I don't think there is a problem unless you have nosey neighbours and they would wonder why the hell did she run to that delivery guy what is she waiting for ...... in that case it would be better to wait for the door bell.

Okay, I just read Roe's entire message out loud with my fiance sitting right next to me, and let me tell you, we laughed and laughed! ...but to answer your question, I think that a peephole would be a great investment! Then you could watch them from inside unnoticed, and then at the last second you could answer the door (just before they knock) and pant like you're out of breath with a big smile on your face as if you ran to the door as soon as you saw their car! And if it isn't someone you like, you can just pretend you're not home :)

I personally would open the door before they get there and yell out something along the likes of "HEY! Get in this damn house before I die of old age!". But that is just me

Hide, watch and wait. It's more fun that way. You might even catch them doing something funny before they get out of their car.

Nothing wrong with opening the door and greeting them as they walk up.

I'd wait for them to knock, unless it's someone like a parent or significant other.

you should wait until they knock and not open immediately cuz it'll look as if you have nothing to do. if it is a close friend or relative which you are really looking forward to see, its ok to come out as soon as you know he/she has arrived.

Open the door to greet them! I don't see a problem with that.

I guess it is fine to open the door the moment you see them...why should you wait for them to come ring the bell etc?
