It's called auto-suggestion. Yawning, just like laughing can be contagious.

I actually know the medical reason for this! It is because subconsiously we hold our breath when someone yawns and so when they are finished our own brain is thinking "I am lacking oxygen here" and so we take a huge intake of breath in the form of a yawn.

I have asthma and one of the triggers that I know I am going to have an attack is that I yawn a lot and that is to subconciously get big gulps of air into my bloodstream. You can't control it...

The answer goes back to when humans worked in small tribes. It has been proven in lion prides. When one lion yawns it signifies that it is getting time to sleep. It is a signal to all the others and the cubs of what they should do...sleep. Well this is just like that only it really hasn't been used by us in that aspect since the discovery of portable fuels for light. It is still in our genes, so we still react the as our ancestors did.. we yawn, making us sleepy.
I hoped that helped.

Probably the same reason we "pucker up" when we see someone eating a lemon, or start itch if someone mentions crawly insects on you. It's all subconscious programming, that triggers automatic responses.
