In the 12th Chapter of Judges Jephtha is portrayed as making a vow to God to present as a "burnt offering" the first thing that comes out of his house to greet him if God will let him defeat the Ammonites. As anyone who's read the story knows, his daughter rushes out to greet him, and gamely submits to the terms of her father's vow. Now I see this story as one of the Bible's many brilliant allegories rather than as an actual historical account--Jephtha was probably a real person, and he probably had a daughter, but the story implying his sacrifice of his daughter in fulfillment of a vow is probably meant to make some larger point rather than being an account of something that really happened. On the other hand, if the story is historical, the question of her fate is left to the imagination. Any fresh interpretation of the story gets 10 points.

My sister is moving to Florida w/ her child. They have come upon hard times & I Mom lives in Tampa,Fl & is willing to take her in, but they'd have to sleepinher livingroom until she finds work & gets a place. She really doesn't have much of value to take with her yet she insists on lugging her tvs, kitchen table, chairs, microwave, etc with her--but she's BROKE & has nowhere to put it. I tried to convince her that these items are non essential & is better off packing most of thier clothes & just start all over. She stresses that she doesnt want to have to rebuy things she already has. She's nervous & maybe it's a sentimental thing shes hanging onto-but it makes no sense to hold on to those things. its a new life & i think she should just start w/ a clean slate. She driving her old car down there-i say, pack it up and keep it moving. She wants to hussle up some $ to get a self haul truck that will be expensive to move crap she just doesnt need. what can i do to help her wake up?

I have been a Christian for quite some time and for quite some time I have had a problem. I pray very hard for my parents and other family members who are not saved yet, asking God that they would find salvation. However, in order for that to happen, I understand that I have to do my part. But everytime God asks me to do something, I get scared and whiney saying that I can't do what he asks of me. Even simple things, like talking to my parents, gets me down. I have prayed about this, but nothing has seemed to change yet. Does anyone have any comments that may help? Everytime he asks me to do something I end up falling away, realizing that I can't do anything without Him, asking for forgiveness, and trying again. Please Help!!

I mean, surely it would benefit certain members of society to have theit tattoos removed, say if someone has tattoos on his hands or face and is finding it hard to gain employment as a result. But the prices seem to run into thousands of pounds, even to remove a small one, making it impossible for most people to get their tattoos removed. Why is laser surgery so expensive?

Matthew 5:10-11

Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Does it always seem the closer you try and get to Jesus your flesh seems to always pull you the other direction. Have you ever wondered if anyone in the bible has had the same problem? Well Paul did. Even King David did, but I can identify with paul more on the flesh. Read Romans 7:15-24. Paul understood that in the flesh he was losing but if he let the Holy Spirit fight that battle he could win. We can't overcome our flesh but God can.

I have many questions about islam, entirely too many to ask on the yahoo website...i've been doing a lot of research but there are just some questions i have that books and the internet can not answer, and i don't know of any practicing muslims (my family and friends are of the Christian faith). Of late i've been contemplating converting but because of my Christian upbringing and most of the people i am around im alone as far as gaining wisdom...the only place of worship that I am aware of here is a NOI (nation of islam) place of worship and im not interested in the particular sect. If someone could help i would really appreciate it.
