Then salvation means nothing and if your god puts stealing a pack of gum in the same catagory as murder, that is no religion I want to be a part of

It is responsible in the social context of how human beings should interact with each other. But to the greater question, one that encompasses an entire life, your answer is far too black and white. It negates the gray areas where a definitive response and action are more difficult to come by. It negates "influence," and how we respond to it. My point being...
It takes a lifetime to figure out where you went wrong and why. Once you've concluded that a certain action was not quite on the mark, you are charged to ensure that it won't happen again. The same thing plays in reverse. You may have inadvertently done something good. You must examine that as well and see how you can make it a more permanent and active part of your life.
So yes. You ARE responsible for what you did but more importantly, you are responsible for what you DO in the present. You are responsible to make a life course change based on your personal experience and understanding based in your examination of it. Once you become conscious and awake, you must act from that place.
This is an ongoing process. It's not black and white. Consequently, I am a firm advocate for Socrates' axiom, "An unexamined life is not worth living."

We are responsible for our actions, of course. Many people do deserve a second chance. There is no such thing as sin, that is a man made word. Are you saying that if I desire to get laid by Hugh Jackman that I have sinned so bad that I do not deserve another chance? That is absurd.

First of all you had many answers but there is not a mention of which answer you find was the MOST responsible answer. So I have nothing to learn from here.
You may need to redefine what it is that you are tryn to say as to 'what is your question?' in order to have a defined answer to process if you would.
First of all I dont believe I will meet God where you say I will meet him. I am already a part of God - I met him within my soul self, he created my spirit. He created your spirit, so if you look within your inner self, your heart, you may find you have already met him. He has no name, he wears your face, my face one billion faces. His legs are your arms and legs, my arms and legs, everyones arms and legs. He is our pets, our plants, our trees, our Mother Earth. You see, religion separates man from God putting God on some ledge on toppa a mountain, weighing up sinful mistakes we are all supposedly making, judging us all to be damned in the eternal depths of despair and pestilence!!!!!Scared Yet! Well thats the God I do not believe exists except for in the minds of men who fear over love.
God is love, we are love, you are love.
You have choices and you are making them, not God, you. He is waiting for you to connect within, and serve in love and helping maintain the garden he provided with us now. If we cant look after this one as a human race, we get chances to come back and fix it. Its called karma, and on a whole as a human race we owe each other a chance to fix the animosities and resentments that a handful on our planet hold.
The only reason hatred and terror is seen manifest, is because that is where focus goes. So we make more.
Wanna know a secret? I dont have a religion, and my garden of eden when I die is exactly as I am going to create it all by my self....and anybody is welcome to visit. That is my Gods promise. And my God is your God, same God, different deal.
You can always change your deal..............

Do we DESERVE a second chance? No. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23). Thank God, he gives us another chance, because technically speaking, we deserve Hell without that chance.

Your right...some lame answers there.
God is all about righteousness and justice.
It should not be the ONLY reason to believe in Him though.
God is all about His love, mercy and grace towards us too.
There are TWO judgments to come; one each for the saved and unsaved. The unsaved are destined for hell, their chance to decide to choose between smoking and non-smoking has past. The saved will be judged by their deeds.

If your earth life is a LEARNING experience. Why would we be eternally punished for our learning experiences? You are limiting progress. I, too, believe that putting it on someone else's shoulders is limiting at best. But, there are other options. Consider...we have to take personal responsibility? We must suffer the pain we have inflicted. When this is done, we can forgive ourselves and others.

Of course he WILL be punished if he chooses NOT to accept the free gift of forgiveness and salvation that Jesus Christ offers. He didn't just come to earth and die a cruel and horrible death for no reason. He did it for this poor lost man, He did it for you and He did it for me. We are not trying to hide behind God or anyone else. Rather the opposite. We are openly ADMITTING we are sinners saved by the GRACE of GOD and the sacrifice made for us on the Cross. God's word says that if we confess our sins HE is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins and cleanse us from ALL unrighteousness. That means we no longer have to HIDE from our sin they are GONE. God remembers them no more. If one cannot accept that he/she is placing him/herself higher than God. There is nothing this poor, unenlightened man has done so terrible that God cannot forgive him of it. All souls are valuable to God. That is why He may the ultimate sacrifice.

Man makes many mistakes and only he will not forgive.
God forgave his chosen people many times over the centuries. He finally gave them up when Jesus came on the scene. Jesus said so. But even then, God forgives the Jews individually, but no longer as a nation.
