Newborn & Baby - November 2007

I am breastfeeding a 12 week old baby boy. He is only gaining about a pound a month and is only in the 10th percentile for weight. I've been going to a lactation consultant and doing weekly weight checkups. I'm on reglan, and he is still not gaining well. I pump several times a day also.

My question is can some women just not produce enough milk for their baby? I've heard that 99% of women can.

Lately, I've decided to just nurse my baby as much as I possibly can to try to increase my milk. The last week I've been nursing him for an hour, and he still comes off my breast crying and putting his hands in his mouth. I've nursed him 10 times so far today for an hour each time.

I don't know what to do!! I'm trying to do everything right for him, but am in tears. Why isn't he getting enough to eat?

My aunt asked me to ask this question. She has an almost 18 month old that weighs 24 pounds. Is this a normal weight? He is very active and eats pretty well. He is not to tall (not sure how tall). She said she will see if the Dr is concerned at his next appt but was just curious what you thought.

My close friend has asked to baby-sit my little one for a night. I guess just to give me a break and because she wants to spend time with him for a day. She will not smoke while the baby is with her but I still am concerned. Any feedback? Has anyone had a situation like this? I hate to tell her no, but I may have to if it endangers my child's health.

I'm pregnat, and I don't know the gender of my baby yet. I want to buy the crib and after I find the gender I'm going to get sheets and stuff. So, I need to look for a nice crib. No more than $550 please and I don't care if it's one of those cribs that can be transformed to a toddler bed and then into a regular bed any crib will do and something that is multi-gender. Thanks a ton! (And please no eBay! I've had bad expierences with eBay.)

My baby usually goes to bed at 7 and wakes at 7, with the time change, he woke at 6 now this morning and now went to bed at 6. Has this happened to your baby? How long until we can get back on schedule, I don't want to wake that early, you know? What can I do?

We are not on a strict schedule or anything, but this is just when he usually will get tired and stuff and I know 6 this time was really 7 yestarday, so he is technically on schedule, but he doesn't KNOW that time as we do, so will his body adust?

I started out breast feeding him, but he was so small at birth that my Ped. wanted us to give him formula to make sure he was getting enough food. We then started formula and it has made him constipated and he usually gets one stool a day. What do I do to help him?

what is this?!
i changed my baby girls diaper today and there were a bunch of clear gel crystal like things, almost like that silica gel stuff, it looked kind of weird and it was only around her girl parts, not down into the rectal area.

any ideas? is it something to be concerned about?

oh-- and we use huggies diapers (i hate them, i'm ready to get back to the pampers haha) but i was wondering if maybe it was from the diaper??

I have a 2 1/2 week old baby who falls asleep within a minute or 2 after latching on and stops sucking. I have tried the cheek/chin stroking, rubbing his head, stimulating vigorous backrubbing, feet tickling and stripping him down to a diaper when nursing. These will get him to suck a few times, then back to sleep. He lost just over 10% of his body weight in the hospital, and at 2 weeks was 2 oz shy of hitting his birthweight so the doc has me supplimenting with a bottle after each feeding, but I'd rather correct the issue with sucking. Any suggestions?

I have a 1 week old little girl, and at about 3am every night she cries and cries. I try to feed her, change her, hold her, sing to her...everything. but nothing can calm her down. My mom said that after I try everything possible to calm her down, if she is still crying to let her cry it out. The problem is, it breaks my heart to hear her crying. Is it a good idea to let a 1 week old cry it out or is there something else I can do???

I know that some people can walk right after childbirth, but most of asians need to rest for at least a month in order to walk or be active again.

Usually how long do they have to rest?
Do you know how long your mom took a rest after childbirth?

i'm 23 wks pregnant and this is my first pregnancy ever and i'm more lost than anything. i live alone in germany because my hubby is deployed in iraq. anyways, i was showing my mother in law a pic of the crib bedding we bought for our baby online. but then she said, "don't let the baby sleep in the crib until she's 7 months because she can die." i'm here thinking, "WTF?!" i mean i have heard of SIDS but the way she said it, scared me. i'm the oldest of 5 kids, my sibs always slept in the crib with no problem. and i believe it's a parent's choice if they choose to have the baby sleep in their bed. i'm going to be alone until nov '08 but i don't want to accustom her to our bed. but why did she say my baby could die?! that really scared me :'( anyone?! thx :|

I breastfed my first for 11 1/2 months, my second 10 months, and I am currently breastfeeding my 3 month old.
La Leche League suggests breastfeeding through the first birthday at minimum and goes on to recommend it for 2-3 years. I just stopped when my babies lost interest. What do you think?

I am trying not to turn on the heater to save on the gas bill. I live in northern Georgia so it is not freezing yet, but it is getting cold. The problem is that I have a 1 year old. I bundle her up at night and put lots of blankets on her. At what temp would it be to cold to keep the furnace off?

It seems like one side of my baby's face is fatter than the other. Her older sister had really full cheeks when she was an infant but my 10 week old seems to have one really full cheek and one not so full. It is becoming more noticable every week. I put her to sleep on her back and she naturally favors putting her head to one side (the side with the fuller cheek) so I try to turn her head so that she doesn't develop any flat spots like the doctor said. I just wasn't sure if this was also causing her face to develop lopsided. My main concern is if there could be a problem with bone structure, such as a jaw problem, rather than just uneven tissue- since this could probably be dealt with when she's older anyway. Does anyone have experience with this?

I was told that preemies motor skills are delayed depending on how early they were born. I was wondering is that true? i know every baby is different. should i be worried?

Cause my second son was born at 34 weeks gestation - 6 weeks early. He is now 9 weeks and 4 days he is smiling and talking (babbling etc). This is all new to me since my first son was full term but he was a day late. He is eating well and is almost or is 12lbs now. He was 5lbs 13oz and 18 inches long when he was born.

Mom of 2 boys - 7 yrs old and 9 weeks old (a preemie born at 34 wks gestation)

I recently wrecked my car, luckily my son wasn't with me, but until I get the insurance and everything settled I'm going to be using my step-fathers 96 volvo. I tried to attach my car seat into it earlier today but I was unable to do so. It's a Graco car seat, a convertible one that is strapped into the car at all times. The volvo doesn't have anchors between the crease of the seats and the only tethering point it has is on the back window area which doesn't help because i still need it as a rear facing seat. If anyone had kids in car seats in the last 10 years and knows how to help please let me know! Thanks a ton!
