Grade-Schooler

I live in a rural area where schools are lacking any challenge for my intelligent son. I had him in private school last year, and wanted my 4 year old daughter to start this fall. Due to a new sibling coming in late September, we are experiencing a financial crunch that makes the 30-mile-away private school financially prohibitive. I will be employed until the baby arrives, and after that, I will stay home with #3 for an undetermined amount of time. My only option besides lack-luster local schools or too-expensive private schools is to purchase the advanced curriculum, and homeschool for a year. I would have to start this August, while working, and I'll have a baby sometime late in September, so I just need some input. How to balance? Am I asking for trouble? I'd like to go into this situation eyes-wide-open.

Today was her first day of kindergarten (my eldest baby) and I'm picking her up from school. She had a VERY rough morning (she has separation anxiety--we heard her crying from the parking lot). She and I have about an hour before the family gets home...

She is really hard to deal with. It is an ongoing battle to get her to do her chores, or even to behave civily. I am consistent with her, but I am at my wits end. She tells me she hates me on a daily basis. What can I do.

My wife is constantly cleaning up spills and food messes and our house is becoming a cesspool. I want to limit food and drinks to the kitchen area only. I want to know what other parents do out there.

My son is 6, nearly 7, and has not much confidence. He has one good friend at school who will be emigrating to Australia at Christmas. He finds it hard to mix with most of the boys in his class, as they are mostly into football, which he isn't (because he thinks he can't do it!) He's afraid to try anything new in case he makes mistakes, and even though he's a lovely gentle boy, who can be great fun, this doesn't always come across at school. He is the youngest in his class, and that doesn't help either. Any ideas???

(I've categorised this under 'Grade Schooler but I'm from the UK, so not sure if that's right, please don't report me for miscategorisation!)

Low cost is always good. We haven't commited to whether it will be an all girl (possible sleepover) party or boys & girls combined (non sleepover) party.

How did you react to the news about there being too much lead in some childrens lunchboxes all over the U.S.? I freaked out about it, because my youngest son has packed his lunch almost every single day for the past 3 years! I mean, you do what you can to protect your kids and then find out their lunchboxes could harm them! Now there are new ones out there with tags or stickers saying they are lead free, thank goodness. We got 2 of those just to be on the safe side!

For those of you who haven't heard about this, please check into it. No one wants their child to end up with lead poisoning!

well I just got done babysitting 2 kids for 4 days, two of which I had another baby sitter with me. I babysat the 9 year old girl and 7 year old boy from 2:30 pm-2:30 am every day except on the last day it was from 2:00 pm-6:30 pm. the lady I babysat for pays me $4 an hour and when I did the math, the total comes to $128. I really need the money for various things... but i feel bad getting so much. I get paid tomorrow and Im scared that she wont pay me all of what I earned but I dont want to seem greedy or anything... and to make matters worse, she is not exactly rich or anything... so its like taking money from a poor old lady. another thing is that whenever I babysit other kids, the parents always underpay me... I got just $60 for babysitting 3 kids for 12 hours all of which were under the age of 10. how do I make sure I get all the money I deserve without feeling bad?

I know this is going to sound confusing, but bear with me. My husband has a daughter who was adopted by his mom and step-dad who is seven. The thing is he doesn't actually know she is actually his or his best friend's. Everyone knows this except of course except his daughter. My daughter who is eight asked me if my husband is really the seven year old's dad. My husband and I are very honest with our children who live with us. I told her, hindsight, I realize that I shouldn't have. I told her that it wasn't her place to tell her and that in time she will be told by her adoptive parents. Well that went out the window. She told her anyway. What should I do? She hasn't done anything like this before.

Does anyone know the State Laws in Texas regarding leaving your child home alone?
What age do you think is appropriate to leave a child home alone for about an hour? (I.E. - If my child gets off the bus at 4pm and I get home at 5:15pm)

My 5 yr old starts kindergarten in 2 weeks, and i'm starting to get REALLY nervous. She's very bright and excelled in pre-k, but over the summer her attitude and ways of thinking have changed. Now she's very insecure like, quiet when addressed. She's even flinching when people raise their hands, like we beat her or something! I'm not sure if she's watched something thats taught her that this way of behavior is okay, which i can't fathom. She is with me 90% of the day, and the 10% she's sleeping! Ive been at home with her for all 5 years. This all started about 3-4 weeks after pre-k got out. I called the teacher even and asked if anything happened to her, or if something happened to another child, but of course no answers there. I'm worried about her entering kindergarten with a fearful insecure onset. She's NEVER been that way, and i'm very scared that she'll start her school experience in a bad way.Anyone ever see this in their child? Anyone with advice on what to do?
