Let him decide whether he wants a new hamster or wants to have some time to mourn. Forcing him to accept a new pet can backfire, and it's never a good idea to "surprise" someone with a living creature. How you tell your son is up to you, you know him best. But don't replace the pet until your son is ready.

The same thing just happen to my 11 year old son. but i happen while he was away with family for the night. I just told him , he cried and is still a little uneasy about sleeping in his room alone now , but he still want another. I told him they have short life spans and I went through a many hamsters when i was young. so bottom line just tell him the truth and let him make the decision. Life is full of sup rises and changes nothing ever stays the same and death is just a part of life.

This a good chance for him to learn facts of life, and you can turn a sad experience into a learning. Let him mourn and be very supportive and caring, and wait a few weeks before getting a new pet.

Death is unfortunately a part of life and I think it would be better to have your son deal with this situation than to avoid it. Explain what happened, let him react and see if he wants to mourn, etc. He may want a funeral/burial and then when he's ready he may want a new one or a different pet.
I know we want to shield our kids from all of the pain in life but I think that dealing with the reality of it is best. Just my opinion :)

You need to tell him. Never ever lie to a child! It is not right. He needs to know. Bury the hamster and then when he is ready, you can buy a new one.
I see it happen all the time, I own a pet store. This is one of my pet peeves! Don't do it. Tell him.

Tell him the truth and let him mourn. Tell him it's okay to cry. Let him decide when to get a new one if he wants a new one. Good luck.

just tell him the truth.
My son watch a squirrel get run over by a car when he was younger. i was surprised at how matter-of-fact he was about it. He asked what happened and i told him the truth. The squirrel got squished and now he's dead.
Be honest, kids can handle more then we expect

tell him the hamster was chosen one and according to prophecy he went to the sky to his creator...
P.S. Or tell him, you (as an lawer) overruled his release/parole and he committed suicide, another 10 years in prison was a little bit too much for him... (sorry I'm joking, don't be mad)

It is not the same thing but my daughter is 5 and we told her that all things die. It is normal for him to be sad and upset .We also told her that when things die they go to better places. Let your son decide what to do. He may want one now or not.
