My daughter had nervous habits and quite a few over the years. Her problem was medical and it was because one of her heart valves is ruined and will not open. Doctor's won't operate cause her other 3 are perfect and they say she doesn't need it fixed. And if he is 5 I'm assuming he will be beginning school / preschool and could be nervous over that. Or, if bullied somewhere that can be a sign also. With kids, you just cannot tell and some won't tell you. Take him to the doctor, he may have dry scalp awhile ago and he got into the habit of scratching and now won't stop.

Probably a nervous habit. Or a recurring skin irritation.
Got to your pediatrician and make sure it's not a skin irritation. If not, ask for a referral to a child psycologist or child psychiatrist. Your son will likely require behavioral modification and/or meds to stop. The fact that it's not just bald, but raw and oozing, makes this a bigger concern for me, as secondary infections can settle in there and cause mroe problems.

If it has been scratched and is healing it will itch because its healing. I'd ask him if the reason he scratches it is because its itchy, and maybe - rather than antibiotic - try putting on some kind of cream or lotion that stops itching. Healing scalp skin takes quite a long time to stop itching. You may have to apply anti-itch stuff for quite a while.
If he says its a habit and not because it itches (or feels like it needs to be peeled off ) maybe try giving him a neat hat to wear as often as he can wear it and reduce temptation time.

It could be a nervous condition or something else. My grandson just went to the doctor yesterday for the same exact problem. It turns out it is a fungus that causes itching and hair loss. He needs to have some type of cream rubbed into his scalp a few times a day

Slap him everytime he does it. If he doesn't stop, lock him in the basement. If that doesn't work, drop him off in the ghetto and come back a few hours later and tell him that's what he has to look forward to everytime he scratches the spot. If that doesn't work, get in the car with him and start driving to the adoption agency. He'll stop. You've just gotta threaten him as much as possible, and he'll get so scared, he'll stop. Or you can trying raising your hand like a ghetto mom, and that'll probably work.

it does sound like a nervous habit, and like all habits they are hard to break. A five year old would have a hard time trying to consiously stop. Even if it does hurt. My suggestion would be to take him in to see his pediatrician and see what the doctor suggests. Make his teacher aware of the problem and the school nurse. Good luck.

Has he been seen by a Doctor. Maybe he has something wrong. I once had a spot that itched like crazy and I had an infected hair. He could just have a nervous habit.

I am not trying to freak you out but did you see that 20/20 segment where the lady had two worms in her head - it ws basically the same sort of thing - the worms were removed and the problem stopped. I would visit your doctor for a check-up on your little guy.

See the doctor first to make sure there is not something on his scalp that needs attention. Then if it is a nervous habit ask for some tips on how to alleviate your child's discomfort and help him stop a habit that causes him injury.

Sometimes, when kids are that young, there might be a serious problem, that they might not know about, or are afraid to tell you about, like a subconscious thing. Take him to the doctor, because it could be infected, or an internal problem, or it might be an obsessive compullsive behavior, which the doctor will be able to determine! Good luck!
