I want to take my four and five year old nieces to get their pictures taken, but everytime I tell them to smile they have these "fake" smiles that almost look like they are plasteredd onto their faces.. Do you think that that would be cute ina picture or does anyone have some suggestions for getting them to loosen up so that I can get a more natural smile on their faces.. Does it matter? I dont know...

My youngest daughter is starting kindergarten in two days. For the last week, she's been throwing tantrums, screaming, and just been acting diffucult. I am guessing this is because she's starting school, although she went to preschool for two years before now. She won't communicate with me, other than to cry and act stressed out. I try not to mention school too much, although if my older daughters bring it up (they'll be in 3rd and 5th) I will talk about it with them. Why is my little one acting like this? I thought she'd be used to the idea of school by now. How do I help her?

My son is starting kindergarten next week and we are expecting his baby brother to arrive in about 3wks. He is having a terrible time. Very angry at us and won't talk about it. I am worried because kindergarten is a big adjustment and then a new baby. Please let me know any advice you have for me.

My daughter is 5 and she has several friends that she plays well with, but if feel like the only reason she became friends with them was because I am friends with their parents. She started kindergarten last week and is having a very hard time adjusting. She is, very subtly, beginning to act out. She is a very smart but quiet child. She usually prefers to stand back and watch things happen in group activities unless I'm there to insist that she joins, which she is then very content and happy joining in. But, I've gone back to work now and I can't be at school (preschool before) anymore to encourage her to join. I just talked to her teacher and she is aware that there is a problem (which is very hard to hear your very bright child has a problem socially) and she recommend just waiting to see if she becomes more comfortable. But there has to be something I haven't tried to become more pro-active.

Sorry about the rambling...I’m just frustrated and could really use some advice.

I have a 5 yr. old daughter and it is staggering when I consider her potential as a person to grow, to learn, to love, to live... but it seems like something happens (to MOST of them) between when they are young and when they get older, where they reign in their potential, supress it, stifle themselves...
WHY?????????

I have a stepdaughter who is about to turn 7 and I really try very hard to have a good relationship with her. Now before I get people jumping down my throat I know that divorce is hard on children and they often are confused by all of it, but she is horrible. I honestly don't know what to do. My husbands family put her on a pedastal and I think it is making her worse. She has a 5 year old brother who is precious and they treat him totally different. They bow to her every want and she knows how to work them. They will completely incovience everyone to make sure she gets what she wants. And the little boy just gets put on the back burner. He has no choice but to do so . his sister demands ALL the attention. She is sooo bad that when she throws hers fits and gets her way she will smile and say Thats what I thought. She tells me and her daddy that we are going to hell because my husbands isn't married to her mom any more!!!! I am to the piont where I don't want to be around her !!!! HELP!!

Every now and then my school-aged children use foul language. I've tried traditional punishments (time outs, washing mouths out with soap, etc.) to no avail. Any suggestions?

My daughter is starting kindergarten and we want her to excell now to help establish both routine, expectations, and patterns. We want her to understand that even now, good grades, good study habits are important. I've met her teacher and it's been established that even in kindergarten, there will be homework. With that known, she deserves a reward for each good mark, even now at such a young age and grade. What's appropriate? She doesn't really receive an allowance but she also doesn't lack for anything she really wants. Anyone reward their children this young and if so, what did you use for the reward?

I love my son so much and he's the sweetest, most loving child. He is a great person because he is comforting to others, he shares, etc. I haven't had to discipline him much because he always follows the rules I set down for him. Now here is the problems. He's starting to disobey and when I try to correct him, he thinks it's a big joke. How do I keep our good relationship and keep him in line. It's hurt my feelings as well as his. Thank you in advance. :-)

We live in Ohio. Since January (IT'S AUGUST NOW!!!!) we have been fighting head lice... it has been Dr. proven that she is clean when she leaves my house and is infested when she gets back from the weekend so I know the bugs aren't at my house! She is tired of the treatments and combing and cleaning and just doesn't want to go through it anymore; school is getting ready to start and she doesn't want to miss school. It isn't that she doesn't want to see her dad or step mom, she's just tired of the bugs. They don't have a problem with the bugs (I guess they're used to them?!)

Can a 10 year old make the choice to stop going or do I have to make her go? Do I need to get a lawyer to adjust the visation order to have it be leagal or can we just let them know that she doesn't want to go?

He does pay his child support ($42/month!!!) but has never provided the court ordered health insurance for her. We have been divorced since she was 1.

Also, how did your presence influence your child? I'd like to hear good and bad experiences of volunteering at your child's school. Also, I've filed this under grade-schooler, but preschooler and toddler parents are welcome too. Thank you.

Why is it that kids nowadays know more about sex, mainly targeting 1st-3rd graders. I have a 8 year old cousin that knows what sex is and knows what a dick is, says it with her friends, and knows what I didn't know til' I was in 5th. She also has a friend who's cousin is FIVE YEARS OLD, and knows what sex is and think a guy and a guy liking each other or a girl and a girl liking each other is fine. And you may say, "Thay no nothing of that!" But they only tell the ppl they trust the most. If your their ma or dad, you'd probably never find out til they show more obvious signs.
