Find out if other parents are walking that way to keep an eye on the kids. Call the school each day to make sure they get there

First of all, a cell phone is a waste of money. IF someone is in process of kidnapping the child, they can't exactly say, excuse me while I call my mother. You are better off in investing in a panic cord that they can hook on their jeans. It's loud enough that if anyone is around, they can help. Also be sure your child knows the rules, don't go with strangers. If someone grabs for them, go for the eyes. two fingers in the eyes should give them enough time to run and get to the nearest house or business. Find a friend that walks the same direction. There is safety in numbers. If not, think about allowing the child to ride a bike. Make sure that they understand the importance of knowing your surroundings at all times and being perceptive of whats around them in case someone is following them. Forbid any use of ipods or walk-mans as they wouldn't be able to hear if there was anyone behind them. Many stranger abductions are done because of opportunity and the element of surprise. It is important to go over the rules and the what if's. Make sure your child knows that there is nothing to be afraid of but that for common sense, there is never an absolute. And with that make sure they know how to break free from a hold (elbow in the gut or stomp on the foot-loosens enough hold to break loose, then go for the eyes or the kick the genitals).

Good luck

I would walk with one at a time (before school starts or on the weekend) and time how long it should take to get to school, buy your children watches and make sure they know how to tell time. So for example, the older one it takes 20 minutes to get to school, and his school ends at 2:30 he should be home no later than 3:00 (a little lag time for getting books out of the locker talking to friends, etc) tell him you expect him to be home by that time or he must call you to explain why he cannot. I do like the idea of seeing if there might be another parent walking with their child the same way your older child is walking. I would continue walking with the younger child though. Good luck!

If there are no sidewalks make sure that they know to walk against the traffic so they can see the cars coming towards them so they can get off the road. I have seen so many kids almost cause wrecks because they are walking WITH the traffic and they have headphones on and cannot hear or see what if going on. If it is dark when they have to leave make sure that they have light colored jackets or shirts so they can be easily seen by passing cars also. Dark colors are too hard for drivers to see. Consider putting reflective strips on their jackets so they reflect the light from the cars. Most important make sure they know not to accept rides from people....sometimes even if it someone that they know. Parents don't always know everything about theit neighbors and even if they talk to them do not know that they may be a child molester.

Make sure he understands that he should not talk to anyone. Many kids get the idea that a stranger is truly strange. Teach him to walk with friends and not talk to anyone in a car. Find him some safe places, stores, gas stations, etc, to run to just in case. If he is every approached by someone in a car he should run in the opposite direction that the care is pointed. Walk the route with him and review where he can go for help.

Try a trial run, meaning let your child make the walk before school starts, follow the child but do not tell them your going to. You can observe and offer any helpfull suggestions later you can also see that they make all the necessary safety rules to help make his/her trip to school safe and easy....

Maybe the older child can get a cell phone, cheap with limited minutes. He can have it for the walk to and from school.

You follow the one to the elementary school, and have your husband tail the one to the middle school.
