My son just started the first grade and will be six Thursday, how do I get him to tie his shoes? I have tried and the more I try to teach the less he pays attention. Please help.

It may seem like he isn't learning but he is. Kids take in information even when you think they are not. I've witnessed that with my 7 year old.Don't force him or he will rebel. Just keep at it and when he sees his classmates doing it he is going to want to as well.

I tried everything to get my daughter to tie her shoes and nothing worked. When she went into the first grade, They had a shoe monitor. This person would help anyone who needed help tying their shoes. She wanted to be the monitor for a week, so she sat down with her best friend, who lives next door, and she taught her in ten minutes. Hopefully that will happen to you also.

There's some books out for kids learning to tie their shoes. They have holes where you loop in the shoelaces, and lots of pictures and instructions so little kids can learn to tie them on their own. I'll email you when I get the book title from my sister. Good luck!

My son was the same way- the way he ended up learning is kinda of a different way to do it but it works. He makes two loops and then tucks the one through, pulls tight and makes the bow. I have no idea where he picked this up at, because I was doing the *traditional* way...but like I said to him..."Whatever works for you!"

i learned a different way than my parents taught me....i couldn't do that overlap way...i did the "bunny ears" way as called in "big daddy"....it's easy...just making two loops and wrapping it around.....

and if you don't tie his shoes for him he'll have to learn how to tie his shoes and that's when he'll pay attention

i taught my sister to tie her shoes when she was little!

making a knot should be the easy part, "make and X, then loop one around"

make a story out of it,

you make a tree with one loop, and then take another loop, and "its a bunny running around the tree! then he gets scared and runs into his bunny-hole"

then you switch hands, and pull both of the bunny's ears, and tada...a bow! repeat, and both shoes are tied.

or he could just wear velcro and flip flops forever...that works too ;P hhehe,, just playing

Sit behind him and he will see the exact way . when you tie the laces from behind him he can see how it is done .sitting or standing in front of him or at his side doesn't show him exactly what you are doing.

M&M reward. Give him one every time he tries. Give him five if he succeeds. Put it in front of him and take it away when he won't try at all.

I know, big problem. Buy the velcro strap shoes for school. When he's ready, and in time, he will succeed.
