I want to take my four and five year old nieces to get their pictures taken, but everytime I tell them to smile they have these "fake" smiles that almost look like they are plasteredd onto their faces.. Do you think that that would be cute ina picture or does anyone have some suggestions for getting them to loosen up so that I can get a more natural smile on their faces.. Does it matter? I dont know...

My 5 year old does the same thing. The pic will be good no matter what. You can try to make them laugh and loosen up.

I like natural pictures. If you go to a good photographer, they should be able to get them to smile realistically. Pictures of kids are cute no matter what.

i think all kids that age have that problem. My nieces and nephews had really cute smiles when they were younger but then when they got a little older i guess they forgot how to smile on command lol. I mean, when they are actually happy they still have their cute natural smile, but when you tell them to smile or they try to smile they can't.

I explain to them that they are trying to hard to smile then i tickle them and tell them to think about something that they like (i usually tell them what to think about, but i don't know what your nieces like). They'll catch on.

oh my I feel your pain! I have four to try and make sit still and smile pretty. I always take them fed and well rested. With our experiences when we relaxed and let them go their cuteness showed through and we had the best natural poses.

If you are taking them to get them professionally done that is their job they are going to catch them in the most natural smile that they can they play with them and if you are doing it yourself try doing candid shots those always work out better.

Well...it's never a natural smile when you are posing. Try telling a joke..maybe there will be a real smile.

Tell them to say "Candy!". They will be expecting you to tell them to say "Cheese" and it might make them laugh, most of the time the thought of candy makes kids smile, and the act of saying "Candy" makes their mouth look like a smile.

You can also say something totally unexpected. One of the best I have heard is "OK, everybody act like you like each other...".

You could do a serious one... of them looking at something maybe a pic of their mother etc.. for a keepsake... otherwise... forget the portrait studios./... doing the pics around the house are the best.. dress them up and let them play.. be fun and casual..
