My son had about 2-3 hours every night. He was given homework on weekends and week long vacations too.
Some parents did complain and it decreased some. No more weekends and 1-2 hours a night.
1-2 hours is the districts unwritten policy.

Not much.. my second grader has a ton! Why do they pile it on the kids.. They do so much at school..
I think it depends on the teacher also.
My fourth grader has 15-30 minutes at the end of the school day to do homework.. Wish all teachers did that.

I was in a private school in grade four, and we had so much homework that my mom actually filed a complaint to the school board! We would always have at least one, if not two, major projects to work on, ones that counted for like 15% of our mark for that class! And on top of that, each teacher always gave us at least half an hour of homework per class; even though we usually had due dates four days after it was assigned, that's four hours per day! It was ridiculous... After our class, they changed the grade four curriculum so there is now much less homework, luckily.
I was just reading other people's comments, and I'd like to say that the kids do SO much work in school... My school's view of homework isn't that you finish what you couldn't do at school, but that it's a continuation of school. So basically they want you to have 4 hours a week free of school, and the rest of your life spent on work. It's crazy!

Kids (no matter what age) shouldn't have more than 30 minutes of homework a night. If it's more than that, call and talk to his teacher. Are they getting anything done at school? Doesn't sound like it to me if he's bringing all his work home with him.

At least one hour every night. Some times it is more when a large project is due.

I got none, but it depends. Times have changed. If it is overexcessive, my guess is your child isn't working in class. Usually grade school teachers ask students to work in class, and if not, it gets sent home.
