Ted Kennedy has acknowledged that Ronald Reagan "will be honored as the president who won the Cold War." But if a letter from the head of the KGB to Soviet leader Yuri Andropov is authentic and accurate, then Kennedy offered to work with the Soviets to undermine the very efforts by Reagan that brought us that victory.

The letter, dated May 14 1983, features in a new book by Paul Kengor called The Crusader: Ronald Reagan and the Fall of Communism discussed here by the Washington Times. In the letter, KGB head Viktor Chebrikov describes a message he received from Kennedy through Kennedy pal and former U.S. Senator John Tunney. According to Chebrikov, Kennedy (through Tunney) expressed concern with "Reagan's belligerence" and the fact that antipathy towards the Soviets will be an important issue in the 1984 presidential campaign. Kennedy stated that the peaceful intentions of the Soviets weren't being given their due by the president or the media. He therefore proposed a meeting with Soviet officials in which he would "arm" them with arguments "so they may be better prepared and more convincing during appearances in the USA." He also suggested that Andropov made himself available for interviews by media in the U.S.

In short, if the KGB man's account is accurate, Kennedy was working with the Soviets to undermine Reagan's hard line policies and influence the 1984 election. As Kengor puts it:

If the memo is in fact an accurate account of what transpired, it constitutes a remakable example of the lengths to which some on the political left, including a sitting U.S. senator, were willing to go to stop Ronald Reagan.

Raise your hand if you believe that Ted Kennedy and today's left-wing Democrats are above this sort of behavior when it comes to stopping President Bush.

Soviet archives also indicate that Jimmy Carter and Tip O'Neill offered to collaborate with the Russians to undermine Reagan.

I'm personally opposed to the patriot act. Limiting our freedoms is contradicting everything that our forefathers founded this country upon. When you start doing this, we begin to move in a nonfree society and everything that grants us freedom that was declared on a sheepskin was false. Two questions for you: Do you believe in the patriot act and do you think people should be offended by personal thots? I mean racism only exists in those who take offense in it and in turn, keeps people segregated. We should be smarter than that have open discussions and talks about it. Third question: Do you agree?

Why do so few have to pay so much?
If the Dems claim to be the party of fiscal responsibility and also claim that they want to raise taxes on "the rich", is it then true that they wish to increase spending and are, in fact, not "the party of fiscal responsibility" but instead the same old Tax-and-Spend Dems that we've come to know and love so well?

Not yet up to speed on who's paying taxes in the US? This page shows it as well as any: http://www.allegromedia.com/sugi/taxes/

And if, like some, you think the data on that page are nonsense please feel free to find reputable data supplied by our tax authorities refuting it. I suggest this because some of the more intellectually-challenged on this forum insist on rejecting data out of hand because it clashes with their (very limited) world view.

Oh, and one other oft-heard complaint is that the data on the linked page is out-of-date (it's from '99) - again, I'd welcome a link showing that there's been a relevant material change.

values are hard to understand as being the same as the ones taught by Jesus.

Does anyone remember the Christian left when the word Christian is thought of..

I feel many of the Christian right support things Jesus would not approve of SO I want to know
is 1.why do they ignore the teachings of the one they say they follow,
2. do more people hate Christians due to Bush and Christian right and
3.does anyone remember there are Christians on the left who disagree with them?

If you must get political, you must, but at least address these three specific questions in your answer especially the 2nd one as to effect of Bush and religious right on people's views/hatred of christians and is the hatred for Christains escalating due to this.

I hate being the bucket of cold water on your head, but they're gone.

The border states belong to America in name only. Mexico has all but bred us out of the border states.

Before these states become bankrupt, (if they are not already) and turn into a sinkhole for our tax dollars, maybe it is best to wave the white flag and give them to Mexico. The problem is too big. Is it best to start over and enforce a new border on the northernmost border of the border states?

I thought it was fair and balanced and showed both sides?

but I talk to someone who watches any other channel and they can tell me where Democrats stand on the issues and their policy issues?

but I talk to someone that watches Fox News and they have no clue where the Democrats stand and they seem to think that the fact that they never see any issues on Fox News is evidence that there are none?

why are they so painfully unaware of what the other party is doing? It makes me seriously wonder about the accuracy and bias of Fox News when those that watch it are painfully uninformed on what a major policital party is doing...

This is just like me saying you hate america because you love giving up freedoms to king Bush.

Orange has applied for planning permission to increase the height of an existing mobile phone mast from 14 metres to 20 metres and to add on 6 new antennas and 1 antenna dish. The mast is located in the grounds of a sports club and is less than 25 metres from the rear gardens of the houses backing on to it.

I live across the road from the sports club but given the increased height the mast will be clearly visible to myself and my neighbours. I know you can't object on pure health grounds or because it might affect the value of your property. Can anyone give me some guidance on what objections I could use.

I am also organising a petition.

Thanks in advance for your help.

You hear people cry that the rich aren't being taxed enough, and that no one is giving the poor enough money. Well, let me strike the root of the premise here. Why are poor people so special that they deserve an entire system designed to steal by force the wealth of others who actually work for it to give to them. You'd think they were gods or something.

In earlier times, people would be taxed, expected to give up a portion of their harvest, sacrifice their best animals, all to appease the gods. Now, we have to do the same for poor people. Since when did they become gods? Or do you think they are a test of mankind, sent to us by the gods?

There is nothing special about poor people. They are just an unambitious, incurious bunch who never studied in high school, but expected the more conscientious kids to give them the answers on the tests. Sorry, I don't feel any obligation to support them and their self-destructive habits and bad values.
