NO.
1. Judges legislate from the bench. They have decided that abortion is to be legal, gay unions must have some level of recognition, and that is it unconstitutional to have prayer in schools (eventhough the First Amendment prohibits the government from banning the free exercise of religion)
2. We have the ACLU and other left wing secular groups suing over everything. If Democrats lose an election, they sue. If someone has a Christian symbol on public property, they sue. The list goes on.
3. We have a tax system that violates the equal protection clause by taxing you more when you make more.
4. We have government freebies: schools, health care, prescription drugs, retirement, etc. All of these cost too much and offer lowsy results.
The worst part of this all is we as a society have no understanding of how our government was setup, let alone all the violations of the Constitution.

I would say yes, for not the least reason that there was legal slavery of Africans and wholesale slaughter of and land theft from Native Americans at the founding. But ALL of us, of every race, have suffered a SERIOUS decline in democracy since the 1-20-01 Tragedy. Now if we recover from this, and start to have HONEST elections again, it will be a meaningless historical blip. A new Democratic majority Congress might be enough to restore the Constitution and checks and balances. But with crooked elections we will all be slaves within our lifetimes. Down with Dictator Dumbya!!!

NO, We are becoming a facist nation. Look at the Patriot Act as well as The MIlitary Commissions Act of 2006. We can be taken by the government and never be seen again. No one since the Nazis has had this power. We have a Totalitarian Government the keeps the People in line through Socioeconomic controls.

much less democratic as the congress, presidents and the courts have restricted the rights and guarentees under the consitution, and now the greatest democratic document ever produced is nothing more than a door mat for the polititions

It depends on your definition of democratic. The Constitution, which defines our unique form of democracy, is a different document than it was in the 18th Century. It has been amended many times. But in short, I would say that since the Bill of Rights is intact (despite efforts by our current president to change them), I would say we are still as democratic as we were in the past, thanks to the ingenious checks and balances we enjoy.

Democracy in its most basic term = survival of the fittest.
In 1796, there was no social security, no welfare, no government pensions, health care, corporate welfare, etc.
You either made a living and survived, or you died. Survival of the fittest.
Every year our elected officials vote more social programs and corporate "welfare" into law. We will never be a true capitilist democracy again.

Yes. If you read your history, there were a great many restrictions on the average citizen. There was a definite class structure based of wealth, status, race, and religion.
We definitely take our present liberties for granted!

depends how you look at it
today, women vote, "coloured" people vote
but also the US is far more federalized than in the early years. Federal taxes have to be paid. un-elected judges decide what the laws should look like. BATF people and mad Dems try to decide what your 2nd amendment really means. Speech codes and the PC crowd to decide what your 1st amendment rights mean.
As I said, it depends on your values.

I would say so since back then they practiced slavery and only white male property owners could vote.
Note that slavery in America started before the USA was formed and still was a British colony.

For all you left-wing wackos! Get off the Bush is a fascist
bandwagon!
First of all, look up fascist in the dictionary. If Bush were truly fascist, abortion would've been banned completely, and prayer would be allowed in every school. Also, CNN, CBS and all the liberal media outlets would've been shut down long ago! Anyone who made fun of, or spoke against bush would've been in jail.
So no, we're not ruled by a fascist. But if liberals took control we would be. Wait... we would be a communist nation, were only govt officials would be the rich ones, religious practices would be illegal, and we would be illiterate and uneducated, incapable of developing scientists, and with a starving lower class. And there would be freedom of speech, as long as it was left-wing speech. We'd be North Korea. That's what you want, right?
