Law Enforcement & Police - February 2007

[Selected]: All categories Politics & Government Law Enforcement & Police

I'm an international student in Northern VA. In April, 2006, I was pulled over for a "Failed to Yield" charge. I did not go to court (since I was very sick) but I did pay the court's fine and fee. I was 19 at the time.

In February, 2007, I was pulled over for no reason. The police officer told me he ran my plate and found out that the owner's license was suspended by the DMV for failing to take the Driver Improvement Clinic. He issued me a court summon, took my license and let me go without a license. He told me that "If you take care of your license before March 17th [my court date], you should be fine". I drove straight back to my apartment.

The next day, I took the Driver Improvement Clinic right away, had my friend drove me to DMV and reinstate my license. Now my court date is coming, I don't know as what I should do. I don't have the financial priviledge of hiring an attorney.

I live in Fairfax, VA. I'm 20 now (I don't know if that is relevant in any circumstances).

What about if you decide to stop your car right in the middle of the road, put the hand brake on, get out, lock the car, and walk to the shops. Then your car is causing an obstruction, but could it be described legally as "parked"? And even if it is so described, then how would a court decide what the parking restrictions are? If the restrictions are different on each side of the road (e.g. pay and display one side, residents only the other) then what is the parking attendant going to put on his/her ticket?
And if the answer is that it would be a police matter (for obstruction) rather than a parking matter for a parking attendant, then if you want to park for 10 minutes or so without getting a ticket, then it is unlikely that a police officer would get there in time to book you, so it might be a better option to do that rather than risk parking in aforementioned residents only spot etc.
Of course it would be a little selfish all round, but that's a separate point.

Well, I thought one was innocent until proven guilty by a Court Of Law, not the presumptions of a nervous or cowardly cop!
Who makes him/her the Judge and Jury? If a person does commit a minor crime or has an internal reason to disobey, why is he/she not able to defend themselves against an attack dog, without being charged with MURDER?

I'm getting my license back this weekend after completing a 3 month, first offender DUI program; however, I have to also complete a 3 month restriction on my license before the normal driving priviledges are fully restored. I know that the restriction says you can go to and from work but what are the laws regarding driving to, say, the grocery store? These are things you have to do but will a cop throw you back in jail if he pulls you over on your way to the store? Any information at all would be helpful.

I have just been reading the news and all it is children being horrifically abused and killed. This country has got to get a grip. Our forensic and DNA is sufficient nowadays to make sure nobody gets wrongly accused. I hope the accused get whats coming to them and when their time is up explain to our maker if he gives them a chance that is. Let the publc vote. It cannot carry on and the system has got to change because it is happening too often. My heart goes out to these poor children who have suffered unimaginable torture when we as adults are here to look after them. Hope you all rot in hell.

I am a 45 year old female with no record of any kind even speeding tickets. I am guilty and I am ashamed. I want to plead guilty and get this over with. But is it a mistake? Should I go for the deferred prosecution instead? What could happen to me if I plead guilty besides loosing my license for 3 months in the state of WA?

Why Does the law always let violators know when they are watching them. Every driver knows he should stop at red light and if not he is in violation. Is it wrong to photograph red light jumpers without prior warning?

My husband got a ticket today, and we're not sure where to go from here. He's never had a ticket before, so we were surprised the guy didn't let him off with a warning. He was "speeding" because the zone changed a few hundred yards ahead, so he was increasing in preparation for that. The officer acknowledged the zone changed (by the time he pulled my husband over, the sign was literally right in front of them), but still gave him the ticket. He mentioned there's a Wa state deferment thing where it won't show up to the insurance company if you don't get another ticket for 12 months...heard anything about this? Is it worth trying? Our records are both squeaky clean, so it'd be a shame to change that at this point.

If one of my creditors tries to get a CCJ against me, how is the claim form served? Is it the same as with other legal matters where it has to be delivered into my hand or can they just post it to my address. I'm not worried about getting the CCJ, it would actually solve a lot of issues with a creditor that refuses to compromise. But if its delivered by post I may miss the deadline to respond to it which could be very bad.

I would like to know if there are other people who experienced the same thing or does it just happens with people who don't live in the USA. Isn't there any controle about such things? Cars like corvettes and porsche or mustang GT are cop magnets. They pull these cars over hoping to find narcotics so they can seize the car and sell it and keep the proceeds for their agency to buy more police stuff with.

When Police first become officers just writing citations just them a rush of Adrenalin. As time goes by they need more and more dangerous situations to get a big rush of Adrenalin to feed their addiction. I have known officers that said they won't cuff criminals as soon as a crime was commited in their presence, instead they would give them a chance to run or fight because it was exciting to them, and gave them a big rush of adrenalin to feed their habit.

Could you be charged if the person was really adamant that you had taken them. also had two other people backing her up agreeing that you had taken things? There are receipts for the items but they arent where they are supposed to be. can police do anything??

First of all, castration is removal of the testicles, not the penis.

Here are some reasons I think its a good idea:

Reduces numbers of kids who's fathers are absent in prison.

Decreased testosterone level equals decreased agression, might make prison safer for inmates and guards, and repeat offenders.

Decrease prison rape-If you go in for D.U.I. and you get raped in the shower, you're not going to come out rehabilitated....

Would be a great deterrant, lots of guys aren't afraid of a couple years in "the joint" but would they think twice about losing their balls?

Hmmm, reasons not to...the ACLU argued in 1997 that child molestors have the right to procreate and have children of their own?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
