I have recently received a letter which I have not replied to,stating that what my husband said about them was tantamount to slander against her good character.
This person (in her sixties) was the friend of my brother-in-law(who died last year) he was a veryvery heavy drinker and she could drink too...so of course the amount of money he spent was thousands...he also gave her a few thousand whilst he was alive...nothing we can do about that..that was his choice. ..but basically she feels she is entitled to something..even we did not benefit from his money..it all went to his son as the law states because their was no will...tough thats the way it goes and we accepted that...but she keeps coming at us..in different ways to obtain money...can she sue us for slander because we stated she had already had money and she is saying she hasnt...we do have the cheque stubs and statements though.

We purchased a 2nd floor condo last year. Our neighbor below us on the first floor is a chain smoker. His smoke enters our bedroom, living rooms, bathrooms etc. all the time through windows, walls, HVAC, etc. I am trying to find out if I have any legal recourse in Pennsylvania to get him to stop this. We should not have to breathe his secondhand smoke. We have approached him about using air filters and have offered to buy them but he refuses. Any legal recourse help would be greatly appreciated.

Many months ago, my cat was really sick so I took him to the vet. The check I wrote for the bill bounced and I have not had the money to pay for it. So now, I have a court date tomorrow. It says that check deception is a criminal offense. What is going to happen? I am so scared. Are they goning to take into consideration that I have never done anything wrong and that I just haven't had the money to pay the check off? I am a single mother putting myself through college. Things are extremely tight. If you have any advice, please help me. I have been throwing up all morning because I am so freaked out.

We both agreed to a percentage rate verbally in the begining, I helped secure a athelic a contract for 1 year with a big sports Organisation, and 1 year negotiation period leading to another contract. The athelic has competed 3 times this year, and has paid me 3 times for my services. He has still 2 more events for this year to compete in.

Since the last payment we had a disagreement about how I should still be paid the percentage agreed on. I dont have a signed contract as this persons manager, but do have e-mail, fax, flight booking evidence that I was a third party who secured this contract for him.

It has come to greed, if anyone can tell me if I have a chance in court, before I go to see a lawyer. Any comments welcomed

I live in a small town where there is a police officer that is doing something that does not seem right/legal to me. When he is finding people with marajuana, he is writing 2 citations. One for possession of marajuana and one for possession of paraphernalia for the baggy the pot is in. Each ticket is $165. Usually they just tell the people to pay the fines and no record will be filed with the court. This seems curropt to me. Is a baggy really legally considered drug paraphernalia?????

All men are innocent until proven guilty. If you are arrested and they conficate your house, then later you were found innocent by the courts. They release you and give you back your house. This is the law!!! This is human rights!!! Will it apply to Saddam Husseim? Will he be released and given back his country if found innocent in the courts? Will President Bush then be arrested for war crimes, for invading a country without cause. Remember the courts have said Husseim did no wrong!!! He was found innocent by his peers.

People causing trouble, stealing, muggings, car theft ,home breakins etc etc.
Are we to soft and should these people be made to repay or make good on what they did wrong? Does the law deal properly with these crimes.

I'm in the UK and I'm sure this applies worldwide. It may cost Billions to set up but surely it would be worth it. Take DNA from EVERY baby born - all crimes would be easily solved, bodies could be identified - thus saving Billions in police time. Many will say its against human rights of privacy, blah blah blah, but if you have done nothing wrong what have you to gain from not giving DNA?

As a expatriated brit, It never fails to amaze me how many lawyers
you americans have. We have a lay magistrate that consists of volunteers, able to hear lesser cases that would be your equivalent of your civil court system. Our "justices of the peace"
perform such acts out of the same volunteer spirit that americans
have for public affairs, and eliminate the need to professionalize
the system to the point you Americans have had.
Even on Yahoo answers, I see many answers that mention looking
for legal counsel, suing, etc. Its so ironic, because many europeans get the impression that americans "get along",
while in actuality they seem to run to legal means to settle even
petty nonsense(two replies to a waitress who got stiffed by a
customer advised the waitress to obtain legal counsel immediately!) This would be beyond laughable in the UK!
Finally, don't you feel that American lawyers game the system,
so to speak, to keep the biz flowing? I'm thinking of tort
& ambchasers.
